I think L is just really lazy. Remember in the yotsuba arc he said he was depressed and didn't want to catch Kira anymore, but Light kept punching him until he'd get back to work. He only cares about figuring out who the culprit is, and after he does he loses interest and does something else. Its why he kept Light locked up for 50 days even when people started dying again, he knew he had caught the original Kira, and wasn't so interested in the copycats

Asian schools aren't like western schools were they teach critical and conceptual thinking. In a Japanese classroom it's about memorization not conceptualization. You're being taught how to pass the test.

Nah, the moment Light was in a position to kill him (Misa seeing his name) he captured both. L fought pretty well, considering he didn't know the Death Note's rules and still could figure out that the 13 days rule was false and Light was Kira.
Not to disrespect Light, he was in a tight spot, a Shinigami was gunning for his head and he was the main suspect and still could get ahead with his hands relatively clean. L should have been more careful around the shinigami, in fact he could have investigated about Misa's assault and get a clue about shinigamis messing with humans, but it would have been too much.
Also, Light was miles above the level of highschoolers or college students. He aced a test for the most prestigious college with almost no effort (he was using most of his time to be Kira at that point), and he also outsmarted two FBI agents.
