It's bait. But for the sake of discussion I will say that the show don't tell meme is so poorly understood by many people. The main point of "show don't tell" is to not have characters say something they wouldn't for the sake of exposition. Kurapika and Mizai had a natural conversation slightly alluding to issues we had no idea they were considering beforehand and as they did various scenes of Mizai meeting with personnel and military arrests were shown.
On the other hand there are a number of ADHD kids drawn to HxH because of it's popularity that are disappointed when it ends up being story-centric rather than action-centric.

The former is a passive reaction to a situation you cannot handle, escape or overcome. The latter requires you to actively give up a lot/everything for a certain purpose. Just because you're afraid of death won't make you fight any more. You need to accept it and turn terror into fuel.
Gon was broken from the fact that one of his friends/mentors got murdered when he himself couldn't help him. And with a serious character as him and the fact that he is easily willing to sacrifice his own body to accomplish his goals (see the fight against the bomber back on GI), it makes for a dangerous combination for anyone involved.
