Kabaneri has been riddled with common tropes and clichés of the genre as well the usual marks and patterns of its director and writer that are present in all their other works from the start.
You don't have to be a psychic to see the general direction of the show or not to be surprised by how its story unfolds, which isn't a problem in itself because predictability doesn't preclude quality.
My main gripe with the show at the moment is that on the contrary, it tried a bit too hard to up the stakes and take us by surprise, and by doing so ended up sacrificing the relative consistency it had up until now.

I'd say this show did go downhill when Biba showed up, but I can still root for Ikoma and a couple of the other characters. So I prefer this to either of those productions.
