I bought them ebay for like $4-$5 each. A library was getting rid of them and I figured it was worth the savings to have the markings on them.
>>
>>142836346
Ah, that makes sense. I get a lot of my stuff through paperbackswap.com because it's essentially $4 a book including shipping, but I end up with a lot of library books too and I've got mixed feeling on that. I even got a couple porny rated M titles from a school library's collection. I guess they didn't look into what they were ordering, just thought 'comics are for kids.'

I've been collecting about 15 years and I've got a decent job.

For doujinshi specifically though, it's pretty easy if you've got varied taste and don't need everything right away. I wait a couple years after a series peaks in popularity and then I snap up big group lots on Yahoo! Auctions as the fanbase moves on to other things. Even if there are only 5-10 books I really want, it can be as low as 1,500 yen for an auction of 100+ books. I keep what I want and resell the rest dirt cheap, pass them out to friends, swap them with other collectors. Depending on the popularity of the series/artists I can actually make a small profit on some orders. There are still certain books/artists I go for right away, full price.

If you want to see what's out there you can poke around Yahoo! Auctions yourself, just search with 同人 冊. 冊 denotes a count of books so you'll only turn up auctions with multiple volumes with way.
>>
>>142839294
Ah, and if you are looking for cheap manga conventions are great for this. If there is one in your area you can usually buy a badge from someone leaving for a couple bucks, sometimes for free, and then snap up series at a big discount in the vendor's area. A lot of places you can get manga for $3 or less per volume. The only downside to this is that the selection is a little limited and you usually end up with missing volumes, so you'll have to either have a fantastic memory or keep a list of what you need to fill in the series you are looking for.

I'm a member of a couple of book swapping websites as well. Sometimes people will post old out of print stuff that's hard to find/expensive on Amazon because they don't know what they've got. I've snagged a few really nice artbooks this way.

I liked the first volume but thought the story kind of retread ground a lot in the second volume. It was worth reading but nothing amazing.

REAL is easily my favorite series and I recommend it to everyone though.
>>
What's your preferred place to buy from? Amazon, EBay, Kinokuya etc.?
>>
>>142835069

Any chance they'll reprint 20th Century Boys in omnibus format? I own volumes 1-6 but stopped since I was waiting for more to come out and just forgot about it.

Also payday came a couple days ago. What should I get? Last time I got: Astro Boy volume one which I'm reading and enjoying a lot, Nichijou volume 2, Servant x Service omnibus 1 and The Push Man and Other Stories. Thinking about getting more Yoshihiro Tatsumi to complete my collection of his printed works or maybe the final Planetes or second Franken Fran omnibus.
>>
>>142840545
Ok I'll check it out. REAL that is.
>>
>>142840812
I think 2CB has a pretty good chance of being reprinted considering the treatment Viz just gave Monster. Although it won't be in the next 3 months they already have their upcoming series scheduled.

I'd say go for the next volume of Astro Boy if it's out. I seriously want to pick that one up.
>>
>>142836279
I have that same AX gekiga collection, interesting stuff. Pretty sure I skipped one of the later stories cause it didn't seem worth it to understand
>>
>>142838528
You, sir, are what I aspire to be.
>>
>>142840957

I'll add Astro Boy omnibus 2 onto my list. Really been impressed with the first one so far despite only reading the opening story and the Hotdog Corps which was pretty good. I wish Dark Horse gave it a similar treatment to their Planetes omnibus since that release was spectacular. I'm heading to my LCS on Wednesday since I have some titles on my pull list to get so I'll see if they have it or A Girl on the Shore.

>Robot #44 remembering his past

>>142836279

Ax worth picking up? I love reading experimental novels and literature, sounds like something I'd enjoy a lot and I heard it has a Yoshihiro Tatsumi story in it.
>>
>>142841092
>A Girl on the Shore
Good taste. It's a great release.
>>
>>142841092
Not op but it's alright, I found more misses that hits in it but it's up to your tastes, just checked mine and it's about 400 pages and 33 different stories And yeah Tastsumi has one, I forgot what it was till now.
>>
>>142841012
Damned if that isn't one of the best compliments I've ever received.

>>142840382
Thanks mate. For what it's worth, I'm open to scanning any doujinshi that isn't already available on-line. Just keep in mind about 95% of what I've got is probably stuff only I'm interested in.
>>
>>142841207

Looks really well put together, I kind of thought it was funny how it was still shrink wrapped when I checked it last time I was there considering all the really lewd scenes but I've been meaning to get more Asano into my collection. Overall very thoroughly happy with how the English release of Punpun was handled.

So my shelf friends, what are we reading on our backlogs? I'm currently going through Astro Boy omnibus one and then after that will probably either read Dream Fossil or Onwards Towards Our Noble Deaths.
>>
Manga is such a waste of space. They take up so much god damned room, and realistically you can't even have a fraction of the good series on your shelves. Not to mention most the time you rarely reread stuff unless its been years later or its really good.
>>
>>142841301

You could really say the same thing about other physical things, pointless argument.
>>
>>142841301
You can say the same for books or fucking hell, any physical art form, be it paintings, statues or even figures.
>>
>>142841364
Sure, but at least figures are nice to look at or posable, dakis can be held, keychains can be clipped, shirts can be worn, bags can hold shit, pins can be tacked on, badges can be ironed in, mousepads can be used.

>>142841454
Paintings can be put up on walls and don't take as much space, plus they're actually nice to look at and can make a rooms ambience better. Books are a waste of space, as are DVDs. You read/watch them once or twice, and then they're a paperweight.
>>
>>142841301
You're not wrong. For some reason the joy I get out of buying a new release or finding an old one outweighs the space they take up. At least for now.

>>142841288
Yeah, I hate how shrink-wrapping can bend edges but the volume I got was fine. Backlog-wise I've got the most recent Jojo, volume 13 of Yotsuba, and The last 14 volumes of FMA. Just picked them up pretty cheap used. Going through that one slowly.
>>
>>142841496
My mileage tends to vary with certain books. Like some of my favorite series I've reread so many times that it's definitely worth having a paper copy. Other ones just chill out on the shelf.
>>
>>142841454

Paintings aren't good in abundance, nor are statues or figures. Books are definitely a waste of space except for your absolute favorites.
>>
>>142841522

>Cheap manga
Nice, my local charity shop just started a comic and manga section recently so I've been heading in there to see if I could find anything good. Nothing interesting so far, just a few shounen titles and I did see a batch of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei volumes for £2 each but I was hesitant on getting them considering I knew how there would likely never be another English release due to how difficult the translation is.

For FMA would you suggest going for the singles or omnibus editions? I bought volumes 1,2 and 4 many, many years ago but I'm tempted to just order all nine omnibus releases considering it's much easier on shelf space.
>>
>>142841641
I have a beef with omnibuses so I can't recommend either way. Except that I think there is a box set for the single volumes, which is usually a deep discount if you find a cheap one and then stack it with another discount. If I had to rebuy the series that's how I would go.

I just really hate omnibuses. I don't like how poorly made ones will probably lead to the spine cracking, and how they're heavier so I have to read it leaning against something so my wrists get tired. The only ones I have are like the new Monster reprints and the hardcover Jojos, because I couldn't pass them up.

>>
>>142841496
Figures are a liability.

More often than not, they end up being cluttered up on a desk or shelf together. It's a mess to look at. You'd need a dedicated shelf to display them in a manner that is aesthetically pleasing. And if you're the type that collects alot, it gets harder and harder to arrange them the more there are.

Not to mention accidentally nudging them or an earthquake will fuck them over. They're also a pain in the ass to move around. And they literally serve no purpose other than to look pretty and gather dust.

Books/Comics/Manga/Artbooks etc also serve the same "aesthetically" pleasing purpose that others have. Some books have really nice covers. And a collection of these stuff in a nice shelf and with proper arrangement looks really nice.

Also, they can be reread and be lent to others. No to mention they're easy to maintain and move around. You have to be a massive fuckup to damage these things.
>>
>>142841975
Which of those artbooks is your favorite?
>>
>>142841797

Omnibuses seem to be the superior way to read manga if effort is put into them, as you said the Jojo and Monster omnibuses look spectacular and I've been meaning to get them both myself. Really love the look of those hardcovers and I hope Diamond receives a release.
>>
I seriously need a job. A high paying one.
>>
>>142842235
You're going to have to wait for Diamond. Looks like Viz is going to republish Stardust Crusaders in hardcover next. http://www.viz.com/news/newsroom/1006308

I'm pretty surprised considering they've already published it softcover. Jojo's making them some caaaaash.
>>
>>142842231
Kozue Amano's artbook are awesome, great art and great quality also very aestesic, but I would say Yamato Yamamoto's Aurora Gem is current my favorite. Bought on a whim after watching Kure-Nai and had a pleasant surprise, the artbook is great, art is colorful and vibrating, paper is glossy, realy making the colors came alive and his designs are very nice and also include a lot of art from a lot of his work (Kure-Nai, Denpa Teki na Kanojo) but the cover is kinda meh also no Owari no Seraph, a shame he is a underrated artist.
>>
>>142842487

Stardust would be great to own too but I'm positive they reprinted the soft cover trades before I think. Viz are definitely riding the Jojo cash cow quite well. I really wish Fist of the North Star would be reprinted in a similar omnibus collection to the hardcover Jojos.

Here is hoping David remake Hokuto no Ken, can you imagine how amazing it would be with something along the lines of Stardust Crusaders budget?

>>
>>142842536
Thinking about it of course they would reprint Stardust. They've already done the translations and there's obviously a market.

It'll be interesting in general to see if hardcover, high-quality omnibuses start popping up more. I can't think of a series in the past that was given such a nice treatment. Some of Vertical's volumes come bit close in style but they don't normally do hardcover.
>>
>>142842668

I like how Vertical try and match the original style of the Japanese editions, making them pocket sized and in similar shape. Gives it that more authentic experience while reading them.

I need a job to pay the bills, and I'm used to constant overtime at this point. Doing 80+ hour weeks all February was fucking exhausting but also allowed me to make a 10% mortgage payment inside of six months of signing.

Because this is more profitable and I am working toward retirement and saving for artificial eyes or some expensive equivalent to not going blind in the next decade.

I am single with no expensive hobbies, no car, no addictions.

I "rent" my house in another province to my cousin in exchange for not paying rent where I live and work. If I rented my house for money I would get in shit from the government for using a Home Buyer's Loan to buy a place I do not reside in.

Most of the utilities are covered by renting out the extra rooms here to people, the rest is covered by a portion of my paycheque.

Food is free because I run a hotel and just cook food there.

Northern Living Allowance is free money to counter the expected high cost of living which I don't actually have due to the above.

Only got the mortgage this year at a 21 year term. Increased payment amount and frequencies, used my first 10% prepayment and have it down to jst under 8 years.

RRSP is maxed, TFSAs are maxed, and I make money off lending my unneeded money to people - as long as I can pay my bills for three months it is extra. If I hadn't lent any money out I could have bought my house outright, but the way I'm doing it is a tax write-off starting in two years.

I have no desire to be creative and I enjoy what I do in the off time I have.

Most creative people I have dealt with are lazy and entitled beyond belief, because they think that their creativity should be able to get them an awesome house and car and vacations year round. They are the ones who hate having to work because they blow all their money every few months and then have to take whatever shit job is available, but only long enough to take another trip.

>>
>>142845763
Yes, because spending ten years being a musician but not being able to actually afford to pay for the England tour you are planning your next year around is smart.

Because deciding to be a comedian to spite your parents but always falling back onto being an assistant manager at a grocery store in a shithole town when you end up broke again is freedom.

Because selling fucking sausages outside your dad's hardware and feed store at 25 so you can spend all your time living in your bedroom smoking the weed you secretly grow on your grandparents' farm is the epitome of creativity.

At least when I decide I'm tired of working I won't be calling up people to beg for money just one more time because I will totally buckle down when I get back from hosteling around Europe.

As for my collection, a lot of this stuff is old. I'm not actively updating anything asides from punpun, planetes and 20 century boys.
I also have a box of shame with the first few volumes of black butler and some other stuff I regret buying (wild adapter, sayuki reload, legal drug, xxxHolic in French). I also found volume 3 of Gantz. I have no idea where the first two volumes are.

Anon, for you and anyone else interested in perhaps trying to clean out your collections, it's common for anime cons to have swap meets. I've had a lot of success unloading my old stuff there and making a decent amount of money off it, to boot. If you have some stuff you know is crappy but don't think it's worth the effor to get rid of, just bring it with you to your next con and get money from it for better things.

I don't keep count (to keep my sanity intact), but way too much I'd say. They are all Japanese copies, and Japanese copies cost a shit ton. Several thousands of dollars easily. The art books are the most value for the money, and the masterpiece volumes are great too. The old DVD first print run sets are obviously OOP now, so they are pretty hard to get.

Meh, not that sure about that.

The market here is, in a word, schizophrenic.
You get the most obscure/tasteful stuff yet the very bottom of the barrel praised, sold and reprinted everywhere (and fuck any sol/comic serie).
Some solid editions for less than 7 euro and the worst garbage translation and packaging ever.
Editors knowing a great deal about manga (and series to pick) yet a average readerbase that would make the ShonenJump one look like intellectuals.
Plus a freaking distribution mess.

It's weird, but guess it works - sorta, for now.
>>
>>142866628
I can't really complain about it overall, the only thing I can't wrap my mind about is the sheer mess and pain you have to get through to get your stuff in a reasonable amount of times. Not considering the retarded mindset for which many volumes in the very middle of a series stay out of stock for absolutely no fucking reason whatsoever for what it seems like an eternity. Still, I like how there's some surprisingly good shit around and how some of the editions are planned out. Plus, some of the translators did a great work with many series (granted, some didn't as well, but still).

What is the latest Soil volume they released anyway?
