Welp. Let's do this. As cool as Kurisu is, I'm gonna go with Rei.
Because she's actually an interesting character in her own right. Oh, sure, during the course of the series she's a mentally scarred, neglected girl who undergoes huge amounts of trauma and fixates on a man who gives her JUST enough attention that she craves it desperately, in her own quiet way, but I'm an adult and I'm not into fourteen year olds.
Assuming, for God knows what reason, Rei managed to live longer, I think she'd still be pretty broken but would become an interesting person. Never give her flowers, though. They make her think of her clones and it creeps her the fuck out.
No, I didn't make that up, watch the series! She actually has multiple quite philosophical moments, both in her poem as well as in some of the things she tells Shinji and Asuka.
This is a girl who reads books on metaphysics and mathematics in German, loves books in general, is deeply philosophical and can, in fact, express emotions. Hell, she slaps Shinji the first day they actually really interact, and if you don't think at least SOME of it was due to the whole gropefest invade-her-personal-space thing earlier, you'd be wrong. Seriously, she does it because he badmouths Gendo, but if you noted, she got out of her apartment HELLA FAST when Shinji got off of her, ignored him as much as she could, took that new ID card way too roughly to be impassive, and let's be honest. She was acting avoidant, not emotionless.
What does all this mean? She's a smart girl, slowly growing into her emotions, and by the time she's an adult she'd be... well, she'd still be difficult as hell, morose, weak, avoidant, and not very expressive. Basically schizoid personality disorder. (Not schizophrenia. Very different sort of thing.)
So yeah, lots of problems. She's also brave, capable, competent if not spectacular at everything, thoughtful, and by the end of the series more in tune with herself. Plus she's a cute. A CUTE!
