It is most certainly possible with the existence of Nen for Hisoka to do this sorta thing and it is definitely not an asspull by Togashi. Nen is based on Qi and from the concepts of Qi, people have claimed that it can be used to sustain the body's health, survive underwater for long periods of time by meditating underwater, and use it in a deep meditative state to the point where the person meditating appears to be dead. There have been only one case of that last one and none have been confirmed, but now you see where Togashi got inspiration for how Hisoka will come back to life.

Hisoka power up happens during death when his bungee gum turns in a CPR device. His makeshift limbs could end up being advantageous though. He just used it as a foot spring, he might keep it.
