There're three ideas to understand it well.
1) Kuroro isn't fighting alone. He said he's using two power of the Ryodan, but in fact, he released the powers and these two Ryodan members are here, fighting too with their own powers.
2) There're 4 spiders fighting against Hisoka. Kuroro, Sharnalk, Korutopi, and Nobunaga. That's a revenge, and everything is planned so Nobunaga will give the final blow. Kuroro secured the plan with prophecies for the 3 spiders.
3) Hisoka's plan is to struggle, then fake his death, then hide himself, then study and analyse, then striking when Kuroro think he's dead.
Here's the sequence :
1) Kuroro flees in the public (start of the fight), than he swaps his appearance. First with Sharnalk, then with Nobunaga, then with a stranger (he knocks him down), then with Korutopi. That way, Sharnalk is Kuroro, Nobunaga is Sharnalk, Kuroro is Korutopi, and Korutopi is a stranger. Kuroro takes Korutopi appearance because he knows Hisoka will try to kill him first he understands he's here.
2) The fight starts, Kuroro destroy the Ryodan pages and release the Ryodan nens. Sharnalk is fighting as Kuroro, with a fake book and his ability. Kuroro materialize the stamp (open book) and give it to Korutopi. Korutopi makes clones and stamp then.
3) Kuroro release the stamp to put some seals on clones (and faking he's the one creating the clones). Sharnalk attacks Hisoka with a clone. He phone calls a clone so he can activate a bomb near Hisoka, destroying his hand.

4) Massive attack for stamped sealed clones, Hisoka maybe dies. Or at least, he feint his death, then he hid himself. He thinks there's trouble with the number of clones, and that Kuroro probably lied, as Korutopi is probably here helping (following that reasoning, Sharnalk might be here too).
5) After few minutes Kuroro jump of the public to come closer to the dead body (high level texture, not able to tell if it's a fake or real body (as Korutopi's ability)). With extrem sensitivity, Hisoka feels it's a clone, and that Kuroro and Korutopi are in the public.
6) Hisoka goes after Korutopi (low fighter, and pretty usefull for the Kuroro's plan). But when he wants to kill him (that's Kuroro). Korutopi leaves in the public, where Sharnalk (Nobunaga) is waiting. Just as planned, Hisoka is happy to see Sharnalk protecting Korutopi (he thinks Kuroro is too far, looking at the center of the scene, to come to save them). He's confident he can deal with his needle attacks while he's killing Korutopi.
7) When he'a bout to kill Korutopi, he avoids the attacks again, and instead of needles Sharnalk is using a sword.
8) Suddenly, he understand the whole plan, and the huge importance of the inversion of bodies. He totally underestimated it. He's trapped now, and he won't dodge sword slash with his bumgee gum (nor hide or fake his death). Nobunaga slashes huge portions of the whole floors, the tower is about to crumble. Hisoka lies dead. Nobunaga says "this one was for Uvoguine".

For instance, Kuroro had to be himself at the start of the fight because we clearly see him using his book and multiple nen abilities.
It's still possible that he managed to switch appearances with troupe members hiding in the crowd, however he can only do that after Hisoka managed to kill the first guy Chrollo switched his appearance with.
Also the end is kinda weird, I don't think Hisoka would take Sharlnark lightly considering how warry he was of Chrollo's antenna at the start of the fight.

As I said, Kuroro could switch since the beginning of the fight. As he's the stamp creator, he's the one giving orders (there's only a hand when he grabs the microphone), but the Kuroro hisoka is following is mostly using his phone, and he has some poor fighting skills.
As for the end, he's cautious about the needles because Kuroro is using other abilities. And it's the beginning of the fight. Hisoka wants a real death that he can fake, not getting owned by the needles. But if Sharnalk comes at the end to protect Korutopi, Hisoka will be filled with enough adrenaline to strike him/them directly.

I get that HxH isn't classic Shounen, but in this case I firmly believe that going the Shounen route with Hisoka vs Gon is the best way to go about it.

No, not really? Chorus singers learn how to do something as basic as adjust their pitch and vocals within the first couple sessions. That's to get it 'perfect'. You don't even need chorus however to just practice imitating someone, which anyone can do from where they're sitting with just a little bit of effort. Have you ever watched TV, do you actually think people in fiction are talking the way they usually do?
