Not really, in the original anime plus EoE we follow a general human theme moreso than an escapist one. The anti-escapism message is ironically the work of otaku who project their own self-loathing and insecurities onto Evangelion.
Not that I don't think there isn't a fit, but the themes in Evangelion are quintessentially human first and foremost.
But look at Anno AFTER Evangelion - his every anime-work and own production, even interviews has slanted towards his own style of introverted escapist otakuism.

To say that they aren't otaku-centric is silly. Out of the three Rebuild movies, only the second one stands out as being particularly favored by the public. It outsells the other two by a large margin, and always does much better in TV-ratings and when rated on japanese rating services.
Considering the 2nd Rebuild as it's most popular example still puts it well below e.g Ghibli, One Piece or similar works that are more mainstream.
The Rebuild movies aren't unpopular, but they're clearly not as popular as they could have been. It's too fetish-oriented for normal people who want to do something else besides pretending there's a story, or write their own fanfiction to fill the gaps.

I watched the show from episode 1 - 26. Then I started watching death and rebirth, but stopped it soon because i realized it was just the show in a short format. then i watched the end of evangelion (i was blown away).

After the congratulations scene, Shinji wakes up, speaks with Rei about dreams in EoE, and then he is released back into the real world.

Going on the Time Loop Theory, I've got an idea that connects Mari, Kaworu and Shinji. The idea is Mari is Old!Asuka, Kaworu has been reincarnated into a more human body to help guide the new Shinji and the original Shinji is actually the main antagonist of the Rebuild.
Consider this.
At the End of Evangelion, there are four individuals remaining. That's right four. Asuka, Shinji and the hybrid of Kaworu and Rei.
Now, we know that Shinji choose to undo instrumentality, but we don't know how it will be done. However, going by Shinji's development, he acknowledges that there are people other than him and that they are complicated creatures, deserving of happiness.
So, he, Asuka, Kaworu and Rei make a plan. They revive everyone, but reset the mental worldd back to the Second Impact. However, they give each individual a 'pre-emptive instinct' preventing them from making the same mistakes. This explains why most of the cast are more adjusted then they originally were.
Why would they do this. Simple. To give the people they love and themselves by proxy, the happy ending that they always wanted.
However, in order to ensure that things don't turn out worse, Asuka, Kaworu and Rei get involved, securing key positions which allow their plan to succeed. The latter takes their place as Seele's Ace. Rei takes the place of Lilith. Meanwhile, Asuka becomes a new character, Mari. Now, if we assume that Asuka's 'grown up' since EoE, she would probably realize how pathetic she was. Therefore, she chooses a personality that she knows will irk her previous self as a bit of punishment for the way she acted beforehand.
At first, it seems their plan is going as intended. The cast are doing good and being decent people. But then something happens. The New!Shinji causes the Third Impact and sends the Old!Shinji into a spiral of self hatred, culminating in him manipulating events so that New!Shinji can never be happy.
If one considers that, then Rebuild makes more sense.

The lack of Asuka is 2.0 was quite healthy, for me at least. In that movie they finally gave Rei a chance to shine, which didn't quite happen in NGE, and that made me pretty satisfied. I mean, they did kill her againlike Jesus fuck can they stop killing Rei already, but at least she became an actual character there.
Also that elevator scene where she says she feels "warm and fuzzy" about Shinji, that's something that NGE really lacked.

No way, in NGE, her most human scenes were the smile after they defeated Ramiel, which was for Gendo anyways, and the part where she sacrifices herself with the N2. After that, she's back to having the personality of a brick, now holding no memories of what happened before.
In 2.0, however, she actually loved Shinji. That's more character than she ever had. I'm still hopeful she's redeemable in time for 3+1, judging from her behaviour in 3.0, where she kinda seemed to be confused, yet wanting to like Shinji again.

I remember the main issue being that in order for an Eva to use the full potential of the S2 engine it must operate under its own power "awaken" since for obvious reasons awakening was considered to be dangerous for both the pilot and everything around him. Thus it can be assumed that the electrical systems on board the Eva units were like sophisticated puppet strings. Allowing the pilots to Jerk and move the Evas without any internal power.
