I'm a sucker for Shaft anime. Unfortunately most of them aren't that enjoyable from a non-aesthetic standpoint.
Show was okay, but it had amazing art especially the backgrounds.

I love how that showdown on top of the hand scene is basically sequential storytelling with little to no movement yet it feels so damn alive. Whenever current Imaishi trides to use sliding/pans trying to achieve some sort of effect and fails spectacularly I just remember this and wonder where it all went wrong with Gainax.

The closeups in Hyouka generally work in the context of its editing though. Putting them isolated on a pretty picture collage robs them of any effect. This tends to apply to most closeups.

Imaishi was deeply involved in its production to the point where it's a fundamental part of its career and you can trace back his developments back to episode 5.
I just noted the superb use of a "cheap" animation technique in that scene and compared it to lackluster applications in stuff like KlK or Luluco. Imaishi is the connection.

idk, the reason I enjoy Death Note is mostly because its relaxed not obnoxious pacing. It feels flashy by his own, no need to put things on your face. In fact anime oftens feels really loud but DN manages to feel a lot more human-like. Any opinion on this?
