I love how that showdown on top of the hand scene is basically sequential storytelling with little to no movement yet it feels so damn alive. The closeups in Hyouka generally work in the context of its editing though. Putting them isolated on a pretty picture collage robs them of any effect. This tends to apply to most closeups.

Imaishi was deeply involved in its production to the point where it's a fundamental part of its career and you can trace back his developments back to episode 5.
I just noted the superb use of a "cheap" animation technique in that scene and compared it to lackluster applications in stuff like KlK or Luluco. Imaishi is the connection.
