I am watching the original for the first time now.
It's slow. Five episodes and the team is just Usagi. I liked first episodes of Crystal better. There, I said it.

Yeah it's slow because it was coming out around the same time as the sailor moon manga.
That manga updated once a month so they used filler to fill the gaps for the weekly episodes.
Trust me when I say, you will appreciate the filler.
It helps with building the characters more between the events that happened in the manga.
S3 of Crystal is good, but for a first time sailor moon viewer i'd highly recommend finishing the original anime, first.

The scene where he ruffled his hair around in the original anime, and some of Saphir's dialogue about sailor moon was cut in the 90's dub which implies that it probably gave off a homo vibe (which it did honestly because Ikuhara can't help himself)
Not to mention in the manga he's pretty obsessed over Prince Demando and he attempted to kill Sailor Moon/hated her because that's all his brother ever paid attention to anymore.

Honestly, as much as I do shit on the old dub for editing the show and catering it to the Saturday morning cartoon crowd, I do really enjoy Usagi's DiC dub voice actress when she actually puts effort in her performance.

Terri Hawkes and Jupiter's VA (who remained her VA for the entire run) are better than Viz's currents though the rest of the cast is definitely a massive improvement.
I thought the voices were too "cutesy" when I first heard clips of it but the early episodes, and especially the transformation and attack callouts are just really, really bad representations of their actual voices.

The manga and the anime are different in storyline from each other besides the very basics.
I'd explain further but it'd spoil everything, but basically characters and arcs were rewitten in the original anime and strayed far from the original manga that it could basically become it's own story.

the "romance" between the shittenou and yhe senshi was badly written, it wasn't even necessary, the animation sucked shit (there were some nice looking scenes, but too much garbage looking ones), scenes in the manga where the inners interacted were dumbed down, or cut all together making it hard to really care about the inners. Sailor Moon was the focus of the entire show, which makes sense (??), but the reason people enjoy sailor moon is because of watching her and her friends grow as people, and soldiers.
Just wathing Usagi gush about her crush over Mamoru and her tragic past as Princess Serenity is boring as fuck.

I only watched Sailor Moon when I was a little kid (but I didn't understand anything) because my sister made me watch it with her.
When I was old enough to use internet and download things, I downloaded one of the movies (The promise of the rose) and it was kinda meh to me since I didn't know the characters and I only wanted to watch an anime movie back then.
But I STILL remember the voices from the dub aired in my country.
When they first announced Crystal I told myself "now you're gonna watch this shit and understand it" and now it's my current favorite anime, I'm always hyped for next week episode and see what happens to the characters.
I'm kinda tempted to read the manga but it seems long (I can't follow mangas, I just get tired of them quickly) and Crystal is going to show me the events anyway.

The manga is pretty short, actually.
About 52 chapters long.
Crystal did change some things around.
(Like the Shittenou/Senshi romance they put in Crystal that wasn't there in the manga.)
(Also Sailor Moon killing Beryl, instead of Venus killing her)
If you ever have the time, i'd suggest going on hulu and giving the viz dub of the old anime a try.
It really helped me in getting back into the series.

In the US, it was taken off the air sometime around 2001 due to issues with licensing with Toei.
I didn't start watching tv until around 2003, so I was never able to experience watching Sailor Moon on channels like cartoon network like most of the anons in this thread did.
One of the woes of being born in the late 90's.
But hey at least I was never introduced to the DiC dub.

Also Magical (or Ojamajo) Doremi was another show I never watched on tv. Only when I actually started using a computer and only watched subbed anime.
Probably due to the shitty scheduling they had for it.
Funny enough, I have more nostalgia for Doremi than Sailor Moon.
