I don't mind. Maki was the girl that I liked the looks off the most before i started watching, while Nico was the one that I fell in love with while watching the show.

That pair was pretty much canon in the first manga before the anime even existed. Nico was a complete different character so to say (not comparable to the Nico from today) and very playful around Maki, who she considered her new friend. From there on they made the pair pretty much canon.Also they both made their goal to become idols at Otonokizaka High to be able to join UTX, but kept it a secret from the rest.
I guess eventhough this manga in question covers a complete different scenario on how μ's was formed and the group got to know eachother, they just stuck with this pair and also used it for the anime.This manga may also be the reason why ships like Umi x Eli or Honoka x Maki exist, depending on how much you actually want to interpret into the scenes.
