This. How do people miss that he's overly harsh on himself out of guilt and stress? It's not as if his personal goals were ever not aligned with what needed to be done to save humanity. Discovering the truth about the titans, which is Erwin's dream, is vital to possibly defeating them. So essentially he's fighting the same battle as everyone else with his own reasons. Like ever other soldier. Every sacrifice he made was necessary to saving humanity, even if his personal goal wasn't quite the same.
Plus yes, he's been willing to throw his life away multiple times and almost has multiple times. It's not like he's sacrificing soldiers and refusing to sacrifice himself.

That's usually obvious to us readers who have all the necessary time and hindsight needed to analyze the different clues and hints that the writer throws at us and draw our conclusions from them.
Characters in SnK don't have that luxury. In every story arc they're put under time constraints and an amount of pressure that the readers are completely exempt of, and that's pretty much the one thing that puts Armin above the rest in terms of wits; since he doesn't have anything else going for him, he's got to rely almost entirely on his mind and as a result his brainds are working at full speed most of the time.
There could probably a be a couple of instances where the rest of the cast feels "dumbed down" (though the only one I could think of is from chapter 81, and even then my complaint has more to do with Armin figuring out everything on his own being repetitive than anything else), but for the most part his character nor his reasonings are that bullshit at all.

Well, in Armin's defense, the first people to hype up his intelligence are usually his best friends Eren and Mikes, who, as the best friends they are, will tend to (slighty) overestimate and trust him entirely, even to the point of putting him in a difficult position (like Mikasa did in the current arc when she suggested Armin takes command after Hanji squad got wiped out).
And as for the rest of the SC, when you think about it his treatment somehow makes sense: they get very few trainees to enroll in the SC every year due to the high death risk and mortality rate, so smart kids like Armin (and Hanji before him or Erwin before them) who actually choose to join the survey corps must quite literally be seen as a blessing.
