It's basically the exact same as Focker's death, except he gets rushed to the hospital and survives.
Just Kawamori playing with the long time fans' expectations and emotions. It's a good example of why you shouldn't trust something just because it seems to be following an established Kawamori pattern. Hell trust it less the closer it is to an established pattern if anything.

The infected have never shown any coordination or purpose before the aerial knights show up but due to fold signals or whatever many of the previous outbreaks before that happened were attributed to Windermere.

Not really. The prequel manga just shows that the Var recently occurred and started affecting gargantuan creatures and made them go berserk 5 years prior to the events of Delta. Delta was the first time Car was used by Windemere and by episode 4 to was refined to mind control.

Yes of course dodging in important but I am saying we've never seen Basara actually participate in combat or show his abilities beyond what was generally shown in the first episodes, mainly due to all the stock footage. We can get some idea of all the others' piloting skills because they actively were in combat, performed notable maneuvers and/or did some form of high speed missile dodging or something like that. This is why I do not believe Basara is the best pilot because we only ever saw him mainly do one thing, dodge and sing in Battroid.

The characters. I feel that a likable cast is a fun cast and I don't really hate anybody in the protagonists side. Additionally I don't really hate any of the antagonists either, more ambivalent toward them. I also feel that the plot is very much always moving. During 7 and Frontier it felt like the overall plot would stagnate until the time came for big things to happen but so far Delta feels like it's escalating itself. Every episode has some kind of small or big purpose

Not everyone is into music, and know the full details of true singing, but music majors would notices that the others girls crack/mess up on most notes. Surprisingly, Kaname's VA is able to hit better pitches than Freyja's VA.

Sheryl was my favorite thing in Macross frontier, however singing wise Ranka's VA was better. The sound of May'n singing was stronger than her's but she wasn't pitching notes better.
Basara was great at hitting notes too. The best actual singer of the macross franchise would be Lynn Minmay's VA. Her voice might not be everyone's favorite nor her songs, but damn she hits notes and pitches amazingly. It sucks that she isn't able to do what she once could today, but that's what constantly singing does. It ruins your voice, just like Mariah Carey. However they still love what they are doing, and that's good for them.
Kinda sad though, the thing that you love doings also ruins itself as time goes on. Side note, that's why i'm iffy with the whole fold-wave thing. I definitely thing there is a downside to constantly producing them.

The way Kawamori seamlessly blends comedy/whimsy and drama, creating a world that's dangerous but not overly bleak, funny and sweet but not devoid of meaningful tension. I think the best highlight of this is the trio getting captured by the Aerial Knights and Freyja expressing her disagreement in the ridiculous terms of "B-but you're wasting food!" (plus Herman and Bogue's reaction) is a prime example of whimsy lightening a dark mood, and Messer interrupting in "Moonlight Dancing" is a prime example of grimness keeping the whimsy from getting out of control .

Megumi is the better singer, because singing requires you to be able to produce notes at a set tune. However you are correct that May'n has the ability to produce emotions and cut through the mix. In fact, during Megumi's live performances even though she was on tune, and had good pitch but her face and voice lacked emotion. Something which May'n dominated.
So Megumi would be the better singer, but May'n is a superior performer. Which is why many of my favorite songs from frontier are from Sheryl. But credit should be given where due, and Megumi deserves credit for being a better singer.

If you want to quantify singing ability as only replicating tones that's fine, but I would prefer to just call that on pitch. I imagine May'n would be capable of singing more on pitch if she dropped her singing style and sang more naturally, however doing that would affect the other parts of her singing which make it unique.

Yeah it's really Basara's story, outside of a minor mention we don't really need to know what the rest of the gang is up too. They way the rest of the crew gets pushed to the side and how Mylene is treated in general (not just the rape thing, but her being kind of a screw up in general) seems to me like the writers were kind of forced to include them and took it out on the characters.

So far no, the only notable callback is to Max and Milia, but it's explained in the show. Still you should give the older series a watch, SDF is still pretty good, and 7 is a blast if you like rock and the whole "singing as a weapon" thing that Delta does.

Honestly if you've started watching anime in the past 5 or so years Delta is probably the one you should start with since it fits the current anime landscape better. I went Frontier -> Zero -> Plus -> 7 -> SDF which is totally out of order, but it wasn't too hard to catch on. You'll miss a few references, but when you watch the older series you'll have some aha moments that you wouldn't if you watched them in order so it evens out.

She didn't want Hikaru, she wanted to return to the time she was a child without facing tough decisions. It wasn't about love. If was about love, Hikaru would have tried to make it work with Minmay because he loved her more than he loved Misa.
