Not him, but those two images aren't even close to being comparable outside of the red background. The official cover has no "life" to it, it is just drab and unanimated. Static, if you will. Even the facial expressions and how the eyes are depicted are entirely different as well as Kaneki's attire. The fan cover leaves a stronger impression on me, to be honest. He/she mimicked his style pretty well too. Ishida just dropped the ball on this one. And the "random paint drops" are something Ishida implements a lot in his art, which the fan artist was clearly inspired by. I'm not saying it's perfect, but I agree with the original anon it overall is more visually appealing. Pretty sure if Ishida actually tried, he'd do a better job with minimal effort. I really think he cranked this out in a rush or just didn't care.

This is by far the best cover yet. This is Ishida's prime. Inverted colors symbolize Furuta's twisted double personality. The apple is an allusion to Eve's tempted actions and her misguided pursuit of knowledge. What does Furuta want to know? Everything. His conceited grin epitomizes Furuta's sadistic nature while belittling his abnormal insecurities. The sunlight enlightens him and is a reference to his past at the Sunlit Garden, where the fruit of V's greatest agents are raised.

It's like he forgot how to put characters' backstories, so they blend nicely with current plot. I think this chapter was great, fantastic as a stand alone. It had this grim, disturbing vibe to it, that I missed in the entirety of :re. It felt like good, old Tokyo Ghoul, even with the shitty scans and it says a lot. Which makes me even more sad, because the contrast only shows more how bad :re is. I don't know what is happening to Ishida, as he seems to still have it in him.

When Kaneki (and sometimes other characters) is in the covers you can feel the emotions Ishida is trying to portrait like the laughing Furuta of vol 6 or the despair and confussion of volume 5. But this one is plain, it doesnt have a lot of colour or effects- it just feels calm.
I don't doubt that's the effect Ishida was going after. It goes with Kaneki's current transformation.

Furuta's birthday poem gives lucid insight on the subtleties of his characterization and there is much more to him than muh epik clown mastah. On the surface he's meme worthy, but it is obvious this is a duplicitous presentation and his actions throughout the story have a more intricate meaning behind them. He is playing on all the sides, but loyal to seemingly no one as he has his own unknown agenda. He pretends everything is a joke, but is actually suffering internally. You say "poor motivations for angst and being an antagonist" yet you have no way knowing that. You're not going to use "Muh daddy" as the full brunt of his problems, are you?
Don't get me wrong, he's a fucking manchild and that little stunt with Shiono annoyed the hell out of me. I see why some people dislike him. But I like the direction Ishida is going with his character so far.

Like someone's family angst is actually worth the payload he's going to give with his backstory. His life torment are being born on a holiday and no one giving him attention for all the effort he puts into his work, makes his one-dimensional character falls flat in value. Eto looking down on him is exactly for this reason, he's a baby errandboy looking for attention by committing all these atrocities with some major events being directly linked to him. In the manga no one cares about who pulled the trigger, they're only concerned about the outcome and it's implications. Even Kaneki who has found out who was behind the incident doesn't even spend a panel to ask in retrospect why and was more concerned about the escape. Moreover, someone who doesn't sympathize nor understand with being conflicted about the world beyond their own lives is simply self-centered; nothing 'complex' as you make it seem outside of a highschool student's existential dilemma.
