Although I'm not very sure since I watched them without prior Kenshin experience. You could watch them in standalone like me but you seem to be on the right track if you wanna watch the series first.

Yeah, maybe the term live action gives the wrong vibe, but they were nonetheless filmed on camera.
I don't think they were bad, but imho they break the flow and were basically unnecessary. Thankfully they were really short.
