There are definitely strong similarities, no way to argue there. I personally find it to be something like "AOT if AOT wasn't shit;" the MC isn't a one dimensional retard, it's brutal and bloody without without too much for the sake of it, and a lot of the character designs make me think 80s/90s anima which is an interesting throwback.
It's not perfect by any means but so far I've been pleasantly surprised by it.
