That's just how it is when you're trying to match a 3D background with higher framerate than a 2D character. Shit like The Beauty and The Beast or Who Framed Roger Rabbit are pretty much the only examples done right, because they did the 2D in 1s.

A girl falls in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, she is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, she immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on her as well.

But, the next day, when she recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at her with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, she finds out that the girl she called is not the same girl she fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of YURI.

To 'get it right' they'd require to draw twice as many frames in the character.
>>
I think people came up with the forced animation meme because of shows that had budget, and therefore could put in more detailed animation, but put it in erratically and in unusual places. That, and they could afford more animation but didn't actually bother hiring skilled animators.

There's nothing wrong with detailed animation throughout an entire show if it looks good and is consistent, or if it's not consistent (due to budget) it's used either in situations that actually have more motion, or for comic effect.

The idea that a show can have too much detailed animation on it's own is absurd though.

You would think the moeshit is killing anime meme would have died out by now.

A quick look at /a/ will show you otherwise though. Why do so many people still think that anime is dying? Anime has been on its deathbed since its inception if these people were to be believed. So far however anime has never been raking in more money than now, nor has there ever been so much choice. Do only contrarian people who want to bait (you)'s make the posts about moe killing anime/anime dying? Nobody actually honestly holds the opinion that anime is on its last legs do they? I don't want to believe this entire board has turned into a a big joke where hating the hobby is just the cool thing to do.For the longest time I have believed people ignoring all the great anime of the last years are doing so to troll, but I am starting to think it is genuine.

Ok, let's start at the beginning, and I mean, let's go WAAAAAAAAAY back. I'm talking Plato.

According to Plato there are different parts of theater and all of them have a purpose.

The plot
The characters
thought (the motivation of the characters)
diction (the quality of the words used)
melody (pointless today, we don't write plays/film to rhyme anymore)
and last and certainly least: spectacle.

Spectacle refers to the costumes, the props, the visual effects to use a modern term. It is the least inspiring part of a piece, the least important, the least artistic.

Basically Plato argued that poor playwrights try to disguise poor writing with spectacle but spectacle cannot save a bad play and if it does it's a bad thing that it did, only appealing to the basest of human pleasure.

George Lucas should have listened to Plato.

So, if we follow Plato, 'forced animation' is anything where the directors/producers try and use animation to hide a bad story and hope that the audience watches it and enjoys it for all the wrong reasons.

Plato's spectacle folks.

Forced animation is basically when they try to force a kind of emotion, idea, or mood through intense animation rather than through a combination of setting, sound, theme, animation, and above all good directing.

It's a classic example of spending all your budget on pretty animation while sacrificing everything else, resulting in an overall mediocre product. Kyoani are the biggest offenders, go watch Kyoukai no Kanata or Haruhi if you want to see what forced animation looks like.

I don't think so-called forced animation is bad, what really sucks is when shows spend their animation budget poorly. Always sucks when you see some random filler joke moment get 11/10 budget and then something like a pivotal moment or climatic fight have QUALITY. Long-running shounen were notorious for it.

If people on /a/ were actually using "forced animation" to mean something with value, it wouldn't be used half as much as it is now. If anyone here wants to actually describe what they see as forced animation, avoid the term. Since its inception it's been used to bait.

The term only holds the value of what people understand it to mean, and its repeated misuse has reduced the term to mean something as vague as "fancy animation," only with an inexplicable negative connotation. As much as you might like a concise term like this to use, it doesn't exist. /a/ has run it into the ground and it means a hundred different things to a hundred different people, as this thread shows.

You're an idiot. Talent only applies to how quickly you learn something, not what you've learned. You act like these degrees have no subject matter. There's theory behind art. You don't get a degree in music for writing a catchy song. You get a degree for understanding the subject at a deep level.

Anything made by Kyoani is forced animation simply because they have no fucking idea how the body actually works, they're just filthy otaku who have no experience with how the world works.

In essence, they are the people ghibli man is angry at.

I'm a computer science major.

But the content of the classes in these degrees in not simply practice. They teach technical topics, even though it's not required to practice the art. Just because it's possible to write good music without theory does not somehow mean theory doesn't exist. The degrees you get in any art are a collection of concrete topics that aide one in creating or critiquing art. Just like I had to learn calculus to earn my computer science degree, it's one of many supporting ideas that contribute to a degree.

Not all art requires understanding theory. Not all software requires understanding calculus.

You don't think of theory as "technical", fine. The people who give, receive, and use the knowledge gained from an arts degree disagree.

You don't go to fucking "talent" class at art school.

>>
>>142217589
The bad part about this isn't forced animation so much as the lack of weight behind everything.

They tried to make it look like all their strikes are really powerful with the flashing lights and screen shake, but the characters themselves move as if there's no weight in their weapons and no force behind their attacks.
>>
>>142217589
Abe's been better at effects than character animation; I get it if people don't like it for looking more like a dance, but at least the sequence plays to the animator's strength with the abundance of effects animation.
>>
>>142223942
Eh, some studios churn out a lot of shows a season and some manage to have decent animation, see JC Staff and A1 for example. KyoAni's strength is their scheduling, which is why there are so many seasons without a KyoAni show airing. VEG, KnK, and Hibike are still a great lineup though.

Nah, that's just a euphemism for "thing I didn't like".

The idea that drama can be 'forced' implies that there's a natural, correct way for a story to unfold, which the author derailed. People who believe that are the same people who think they could write a best-selling novel because "I'll just avoid all the common mistakes".

I rather disagree with this.
While I think that forced drama is indeed too often used to describe "drama I don't like" or even "any drama happening at all", I do think it can be forced. And it's often for the sake of creating some sort of season or midseason closer, or to be used as a vehicle for one or two characters' development or backstory exposition, at the expense of other characters involved. And don't forget to throw in lots of gray and rainy weather.
It's a bit complicated, but I think that forced drama is a term with at least a good amount more legs than something like "forced animation".
>>

The difference is that Fury Road is competently made, so its not spectacle covering up a non-existent core (like Avatar, which is a special effects piece with the bare minimum of depth required to be a movie).
