Shirou tried to stop Gil when he was about to rip off her heart, but when Gil saw Shirou, he just had this smug expression on his face and killed Illya right there in front of him.

I liked the way the anime handled it. Rin forcibly having to hold him back really showed how much Shirou wanted to stop him, and also helped with her realization that there was something really screwy with him.
