Anime is always an adaptation, it can be better or worse than the original manga.
In HxH's case if you download Viz volumes and no shit quality scans: The anime is not better than the manga.
Problems with the anime are: Censored shit in the first half of the series (later too but less heavily), changed a scene in the beginning for no reason, overused soundtracks and colors too bright during the York Shin Arc. Overall is still a really good anime, but you'll eventually have to read the manga to get where we are now.
If you're an anime guy that doesn't like to read manga that much just go for it.
