The thing was only adopted by so few because it's completely impractical. It was designed to be used against lightly armored targets, but it's a side arm. Those aren't issued to anyone as it is. .50 beowolf is a much better idea, and all it requires is popping two pins to change from 5.56mm to .50 Beo.
It's not because it's some monster handgun. It's mildly unpleasant to shoot, but it's nothing compared to a hot hunting load from a .500S&W, a gun with no cyclic parts and about the same weight. The difference between automatic actions and stiff guns is the difference between a jerkng recoil and a gun that will hit you in the fucking face if you don't loosen your elbows, tighten your grip, and pivot your arms to the side upon firing.
