Hayate doesn't even have a storyline of his. He's just a wandering bum who couldn't find his own motivation or calling. The fact that Mirage complements him and affects in his growth as a character just proves she plays a main role.

She ins't as good as her grandparents, feels pressured to meet everyone else's expectations, flies by the book (opposite to Hayate), doesn't like killing Var-infected pilots, likes the idea of singing defeating evil, and lastly is the mature and serious one that keeps Hayate and Freyja on check. I think she has plenty going for her. Maybe it isn't as evident because we have been focusing mostly on Freyja and Hayate who are a lot flashier than her.
