There's nothing particularly ordered about the different years and they're all distinct, save for two sequel seasons early on.
But yes, many, many people start off with Heartcatch, though I think a lot of people leave off there too, since it's a bit different from "regular" Precure. But that's not because HC alienated them, it's prolly more that they weren't ever going to enjoy the rest of the franchise anyhow.

I've just noticed something.
Something about the Cures this year was bothering me. I didn't know what it was, but it was there. A fleeting sense of dissatisfaction.
But then it hit me.
The mahous in Cure form are antipathetic.
It's different from the previous iterations, when the jokes and shenanigans kept flowing even after the transformations. Some segments were specially funny and memorable _because_ there were Cures on them.
But not this time. The mahous become Super Serious when they transform - it's as if they're completely different characters. There are no jokes, no teasing, no gimmicks, no funny interactions with the villains. They transform, come with a strategy, do their job, and that's it.
I suspect /pc/'s dissatisfaction with it are mainly due to this.

Probably "we didn't think too hard about what would happen once they were in cure form, other than the different forms." I'd imagine there isn't much characterization because they didn't have anything in particular thought up to show.

Incomplete, anyhow. But I'd be more worried about the whole hand-holding theme being half-assed and not well thought out than the motw fights being lazy, since that's what they're really hitching their wagon to. There are other years that have shit fights (and even less thought behind their monsters) that still get plenty of credit as being decent seasons. We'll just have to see if Mahou can make up for it elsewhere, like those ones supposedly do.
