He actually has crippling depression, from the get-go he calls himself an "ugly person" not to mention later on in the series he constantly calls himself trash, stupid, weak and useless. The more cheery and meme-spouting he is, that farther away he is from his actual personality.
While it is mostly for his father to blame, the reason why he is so happy and excited for the new world and why he is so clingy to the people around him was due to the fact its a new life and a fresh start. He can finally make a name for himself rather than live up to his father, not to mention they were the first people who treated him kindly, and a place he can call "home" a place of his own, basically, Subaru still loves them nonetheless. He felt detached thus his reasons for wanting to work so hard in this world and dying for others was to have a place where he could belong. He wanted to have something that was his and his alone that he could work for instead of being in the shadows of someone else. He has a chance. Could have been early in the story but I guess better late than never, right?

Subaru is treated as a failure because his father is incredibly talented and successful and Subaru is just average, if a bit dumb. People around him had unrealistic expectations for him, and he became a hikineet to hide from their expectations.
When Subaru came to this world, he saw it as a fresh opportunity and decided not to waste it, so he tried to be as outgoing as possible. Then he gets the curveball of dying painfully several times, making him emotionally weak.
Subaru is accepted by Emilia, Ram, Rem, Beatrice, and the Rape Clown, and they are the first time in his live that he has had a family that cared for him. When Ram and Rem kill him, he realizes that they killed him not out of malice but because they believed that he was evil, which is understandable since he reeks of evil witch.

There is an absurd amount of autism and shit posts in this thread. It's an embarrassment. There are so many people rationally responding to criticism with coherent thoughts, only to get outraged squeals in response. It's just been wild lunatics howling "9gag/tumblr/etc" or being outraged. It's awful.
I have not read the LN and do not like LNs generally. This series has some faults but nothing in this thread has been legitimate criticism.
His motivations and personality are foreshadowed. I am very sorry that you are not getting the social cues. Here's some stuff you probably did not get.
- The opening scene has him looking at a rom-com manga, he then looks on at a couple outside the window enviously. They are already establishing that he wants/craves romance at the outset. It is later revealed that he has not been alone with a girl since grade school. It is clear that he has very strong interest.
- On first meeting Subaru, Emilia is immediately suspicious of him. She is a candidate for royal succession. She is already worried about plots and conspiracies against her. When she first meets Subaru, his story is really suspect. She checks his hands to get an idea of his class/upbringing. Still suspicious she uses the name Satella-- which is basically like saying your name is Satan. She uses that to see if he is telling the truth rather than plotting against her. When he is able to say it's a lovely name with a straight face she knows the story checked out.
- Ros / Maids are suspicious of Subaru from the outset. They learn that there was an attempt on Emilia's life, that someone was plotting to steal her insignia, and that Subaru conveniently shows up around that time. They are trying to figure out his angle.
- There are plenty of reasons to try to kill Subaru and nearly no reasons not to. He has the stench of the witch on him. Even if he does not know he is being used as a pawn, he is still a pawn. Why take chances when the crown is at stake?.
