LN translations are usually pretty horrid in English.
There is something about timeloops that makes them fonts of delicious suffering while maintaining at least some modicum of believably.

Well, the shieldbro author made a sidestory WN featuring the Spear hero stuck in a time loop with his insanity, memories and levels intact, once a hero dies he's sent back to the start. And his gains carry over.
The author wrote it mostly as a means for world building, lore and to show what the other characters were doing before meeting the shield hero. But everything that could have gone wrong in the main story goes HORRIBLY wrong in the sidestory.Such as naofumi going full demon lord by unlocking almost all of the wrath series shields and incinerating everyone when he lost the duel in one of the loops, believing Raphtalia betrayed him when she actually declared that Motoyasu had helped them all along in secret.
It doesn't end well for Raphtalia in any of the loops, as her deaths and misfortunes are either directly or indirectly caused by Motoyasu.

Basically the entire thing was everyone sobbing and/or feeling sorry for themselves, ending with the uplifting message of "Kill yourself, that'll make everything better."
The first half was Subaru moping around because everything is just too sad for him. The second half had Blue spontaneously die due to, you know, magic, which meant that Red joined him in constantly having what appeared to be milk leaking out of their eyes.
And it's all Subaru's fault!
Because of, you know, magic.

When Rem dies, he runs away because he is afraid of facing the truth that it was his cowardice that led to her death. He knows that if he returns to the past, she will be okay, but he is afraid of the possibility that he will not respawn a fourth time. In the first arc, he only respawned 3 times, so it is reasonable to worry that there are only 3 respawns per life. Furthermore, Subaru knows that he has finally saved himself from the situation.Subaru steels himself and finds the determination he needs to keep pushing forwards.
The episode itself isn't the best ever made, but it is a signal of a paradigm shift in the series where it goes from Subaru being a helpless victim of circumstance to being a hero.
Subaru acts righteously because literally the only people who have ever cared for him have died and turned against him, and only he can save them.
