So, I've just realised that I've watch more Magical Girl anime than I have any other genre. Can someone tell me a bit about what the fuck is wrong with me? Here's what I've watched (in the order I watched them):

Card Captor Sakura - should I rewatch this? I think that since it was the first Magical Girl thing I watched, I didn't appreciate it for what it was. Weirdly, I hardly remember any of it, I almost want to say it was just monster of the week.
Mia Hime + Mia Otome - I barely have any memory of Hime, but a fair bit of Otome is still somewhere in my head. Even though I can't seem to remember if they were any good. Did Hime have anything memorable in it? All that sticks in my mind was that girl with the red hair who killed guys, I barely even remember the plot of the series.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica - mandatory, awesome.
Dai Mahou Touge - fucking hilarious show. Top tier.
W.I.T.C.H - Western, despite it being like 50 episodes, I barely remember it. All I really recall is the portal shit and the plot of the last season. I want to say it was below average.
Tokyo Mew Mew & Shugo Chara! - Much like W.I.T.C.H, I barely remember these, although I do remember that Mew Mew was unredeemable shit and that both shows were monster of the week. Shugo Chara was the better of the two, it had me constantly hooked thinking that it was GOING TO get good, but never did - by the second season it was only saved by its funny characters, the rest of the show sucked.

Fuck - does it say anything that I don't remember the majority of these animes? Does that mean they were shit?

Nothing is wrong with you. Mahou Shoujo is arguably the best genre out there. It takes the best elements of fantasy and reality and mixes them together. While also focusing on character development (most of the time).

>Fuck - does it say anything that I don't remember the majority of these animes? Does that mean they were shit?
Well, aside from CCS, you didn't exactly watch the best mahou shoujo shows. Watch some others.

Odd, I've seen some lists that even rank Shugo Chara ABOVE CCS. I just find it so weird how little I remember, like I'm tempted to rewatch some of these because I remember so little of them that I can't even convince myself that they were shit. At least I have the luxury of remembering how bad Mew Mew was. I'll definite never watch that shit again.
>>

>Odd, I've seen some lists that even rank Shugo Chara ABOVE CCS.
And I've seen countless lists that rank Naruto and FullMetal Alchemist as the best anime ever made. Doesn't mean its true.

I actually first learned about the MG genre well before I started dabbling with anime. I was a big fan of the webcomic Angel Moxie, which is basically an affectionate parody of the genre.
>>
>>141515049
I suppose the length counts for something, when you add them all up, it's nearly 400 episodes of Magical Girl.

>>141515093
Thinking more on this one. My memory might not indicate too much. For example, I don't remember much about the plot of Ah! My Goddess, but I do remember that it was awesome. I suppose the most shocking thing is that I don't even remember how good most of these anime were.

Fuck it, can someone convince me either to rewatch some of these or to never watch them again? I feel like I need a reminder of why some of these are either good or shit.
>>
>>141514084
For W.I.T.C.H., read the comic. I knew the show was going to be crap from the start when they cut Elyon from the introduction. And added that stupid gremlin thing. And changed Phobos entire design. And added Elyon's weird spider friend ugh. and apparenting killing off Hay Lin's grandmother was too dark for the show? Then they just pulled the second season out of their asses instead of following the source material at all.

TMM is pretty bad but it's cute and has a place in my heart as the first thing I ever watched subbed.
>>
I've been watching CCS myself, and I find the SoL mostly boring so far (that may change after I get more used to the characters) but the magic sequences are amazing.
The same thing happened with Nanoha. I wasn't too interested in the plot but I loved all the magic stuff.

Puchi Puri Yuushi focused on the fantasy aspect more than anything, and that's why I loved it so much.

>TMM is pretty bad but it's cute and has a place in my heart as the first thing I ever watched subbed.
Damn. It probably says something that TMM is the one of the few anime I remember something about the quality of on that list. It was entirely predictable, non-stop monster of the week. Unlike Shugo Chara, it didn't even have any good characters to redeem it. The only decent stuff in the entire anime was probably the mild chuckle that you could've got from the scenes where the girl was turned into a cat.

As for W.I.T.C.H, I can hardly comment - I remember barely fucking anything about the series. Was it monster of the week? I don't even remember that much.

Nanoha is not a magical girl. She's a gundam in a dress.
>>
>>141516957
She's a magical girl for the parts that are worth watching.
>>
>>141516631
Or anything, really. The way Madoka became popularied and somehow turned into baby's first mahout shoujo is really strange. I guess I just prefer mahou shoujo that's made for actual shoujoes.
>>
>>141517032
I've often wondered if Madoka makes a good first Magical Girl anime. My first mecha anime was NGE, which I think ruined it for me. Maybe I should rewatch it...
>>
>>141517237
Hoonestly it's so far-removed from all the tropes that most people would think of as defining the genre, that I don't even feel stupid saying that Madoka isn't even mahou shoujo in the first place. Even though it's right in the title, like the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It's just another action/drama series to my eyes. I'd say it makes a pretty poor first for the genre for that reason. If you expect anything even remotely similar to Madoka from almost any mahou shoujo, you're probably going to be disappointed, right? I feel like OP knew what he was doing and this here, my replying, was the whole point.
>>
>>141517032

Seinen magical girl shows really are trash. Basically just fetishistic elevation of the concept of a magical girl tacked on to generic shounen plots while forgetting to write believable characters

Watch the genuine article or don't bother.
>>
>>141517032
>>141517237
PMMM has a certain appeal to people who dislike the mahou shoujo genre, or the concept of magical girls in general.
>>
>>141517378
It's more like a decunstruction or a spoof or something. It's definitely intentionally vastly different, but still vaugely similar in terms of things like there being a cute mascot or there being pretty flashy henshins.
>>
>>141514084
>Mia Hime + Mia Otome
Wow. I thought I was the only person to have watched these. Never seen them mentioned on /a/ before.
>>
>>141517237
It's a bad first mahou shoujo, which is why it's watchable to people who don't like mahou shoujo. The people who had Madoka as their first mahou shoujo likely wouldn't have watched anything else in the genre.
>>
>>141517237

Absolutely not. Entry level stuff should be 90s Sailor Moon or Creamy Mami if it's not too dated for you to enjoy. Or maybe one of the better Precure seasons.
>>
>>141517471
Sailor Moon was also considered a deconstruction of the mahou shoujo genre because it combined the mahou shoujo elements with sentai.

Gonna share my thoughts on defining mahou shoujo, I spent a lot of time writing these posts and got no attention. Recently reread it, expected it to be stupid but I still mostly agree with my past self.

Now, I'm not a big mahou shoujo watcher, they are all so very long, and not everything have been that great even.

It's been so long since I started Sugar Sugar Rune, but haven't gotten far and haven't watched in forever. I just hate when main character falls in love with obviously evil character, it's just not something I enjoy watching. It makes every episode a pain to watch. But been thinking about continuing the second season of Sailor Moon, since that's a show I have fun with.

"Christmas cakes" are not necessarily unmarried women or without children, MILFs can be Christmas cakes too if they fit the definition.

>>141518317
That said with NanoFate married or even before that I would hardly classify them as Christmas cakes. Christmas cakes by definition are not wanted women, but Nanoha and Fate are deeply admired within their world and they have lots of love for each other.
>>
>>141517578
Sentai mahou shoujo is where it's at. It's kind of interesting to see Precure franchise writers sort of re-learning this lesson years later with the transition from the futari was to all the yes5 sequels they make now.
>>
I've not even heard of most of the shows in the OP. What have I missed?
>>
>>141519049

It's made for little girls
The main character is a girl with some kind of magic

That's all. The rest is just details that got added to the concept over time and have little to do with what started it.

Is this it? I definitely like "kids shows" in general. I guess I've just always ended up watching alot of them having younger sibs and working at a day care. I feel like these shows mostly have heartwarming postivie values and are cute as fuck, and honestly, thats what I need, what probably all ya'll niggas need.
>>
>>141516181
I've seen over 70 mecha, and a majority of those are 26-50 episodes long, I think you might just be retarded.
>>
>>141517237
Madoka is a twisted up because it's specifically about using the expectations of a mahou shoujo show to jerk the audience around and pull them through the story. It won't especially set you up to watch other ones because it's not trying to reach you the same way, it's just different. You can like both, though. Utena kinda fits into a similar box.

Meanwhile Sailor Moon, CCS, Princess Tutu, Precure, Shugo Chara, these all play it pretty straight by comparison.
>>
>>141519715
The main memory I have of the series is all the egg-related lewd-posting here on /a/.
>>
>>141519049
Some good points, although you mostly focused on aesthetic qualities, and thematic qualities are relevant in defining genre.
>>
>>141519587
>"Christmas cakes" are not necessarily unmarried women or without children
Yes they are.
>MILFs can be Christmas cakes too if they fit the definition.
No they can't. By definition a Christmas cake is a woman who has never been married, no one "had her", like a cake without any slices cut out.

One she marries/has children she becomes a milf, but you can't call a milf a Christmas Cake the same way you can't call a DILF a wizard.
>>
>>141519774

Yeah. The shows aimed at older audiences like Madoka, Nanoha, etc are basically an entirely different genre in terms of writing, characters, romance, morals, plots, just about everything except for some visual tropes (mascots, transformations, etc).

What I can remember from TMM was that I was a pretty avid shipper of Ichigo/Quiche, Zakuro/Mint, and Ryo/Keiichiro.

Mint was my favourite character overall by far.

W.I.T.C.H was kind of MOTW, but had an overarching plot at least. The arcs were kind of stand-aloneish though.

I remember the first arc was 'Elyon goes to Meridian where she's the princess and is manipulated by her evil brother Phobos' and the second one that was kind of adapted for the show was 'Hay Lin's grandma was one of the original guardians and one of them turned evil and now she's back with a vengeance'. I can't remember after that but apparently the comic didn't end until 2012. I think I only read the first 3-4 arcs though.

I also remember being pissed they changed so much from the comic because I read it first.

Elyon and Irma (the water one) were my favourites.

>Card Captor Sakura - should I rewatch this?
If you liked it I would recomend rewatching it. The anime is a bit of a monster of the week in the first half, If you want a more condensed story telling I recommend the manga. Another magical girl manga by the same mangaka (CLAMP) is Magic Knight Rayearth, I only read the manga though so I'm not sure how good the anime is.

>Fuck - does it say anything that I don't remember the majority of these animes? Does that mean they were shit?
It's a lot of information, OP-kun. It's normal to forget all the details after a while and only retain a vague sense of how much you liked/disliked the show.

If you take recommendation, I would agree with some of the anons above, that you watch Princess Tutu. It does have an overarching plot that gets resolved by the end and is a very atmospheric anime.

Maybe you would like to try out a different genre. Shoujo/Fantasy would be pretty similar in tone. Something like Akatsuki no Yona, Pandora Hearts or Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles.
>>
>>141523718
>It's a lot of information, OP-kun. It's normal to forget all the details after a while and only retain a vague sense of how much you liked/disliked the show.
That's the problem. For CCS, the Mais and W.I.T.C.H, I don't even remember if I liked them or not. All I really remember of my liking of CCS was that it sometimes felt MOTW.
