Everything that has been adapted into anime so far has revolved around a single party around Touma, Misaka or Accelerator. Don't know about later novels, but having loads of characters or complex story isn't exactly unusual for an LN with over 9000 volumes.
Fighting games often have stories where 80% of characters might never interact with each other, each character having their own storyline with multiple endings (like in the early GG and BB titles) where you have to wait for the sequel to come out to see what was actually canon.

Well, Sol was turned into a Gear by That Man along with Aria.
Aria was turned into the first Command Gear. It's unknown what Gear, Sol was turned into, but he is among the first types and completely independent of anything a Command Gear tries to tell him to do.
He also has to suppress his Gear side to keep his humanity/control because he'll run wild and wreck everybody if it's taken off.

All of the dimensional warpgate shit and "tidings of doom" and all that in the story make way more sense when you can actually comprehend WHAT is happening
For instance, in the Xrd flashback when Aria finally becomes Justice, That Man is having her interface with the backyard and since we KNOW that the backyard basically equals Hell filled with energy + techno demons, it's easy to see why shit immediately got fucked.
Meanwhile, in BB is STILL do not fucking understand "Cauldrons" or lynchpins of fucking whatEVER new technobabble term Mori decided to shit out - this is on top of already having fifty fucking antagonists and the most pathetically ineffective protagonist group of all time

The whole comparison hit me when I was reading a bit of the Xrd library backstory shit and much to my surprise the premise is actually pretty cool - it's got that "The Day the Earth Stood Still" vibe
