Why don't we have a proper easy VN list?

>>>/jp/15166340
>>>/jp/15166347

>those lists seem random as shit. As if someone just put together eroge they knew or got suggestions for.
>When it comes to plotge, those are definitely not good candidates for your first ever non-textbook material. For example Baldr Sky doesn't have hard grammar, but it has scifi, military, political, scientific, religious vocab that will make the game a dictionary looking up hell. I wouldn't put any of those games in the plot part into a beginner's guide.
>Those lists have been picked apart several times on here. I wouldn't put much weight on them.
>>Monobeno: Happy End as moege
>You can tell someone didn't actually read it.
>You got trolled dude. Or maybe you went along with the troll? A lot of those look easy on the surface but are actually really hard (monobeno for instance in the moege section).

One of the reasons I love Japanese is that it can be written vertically and horizontally. Languages like English are so awkward when they have to be written on the spines of books. The Japanese books on my shelf look so much better than my English ones.

It looks bad and is hard to read. Have you ever read manga where the typesetter ran out of room and did that? It hurts the eyes.
>>
>>141287349
That's fine is ease is all you give a shit about. Something being fairly easy to read doesn't mean it's also going to be good enough to make you want to struggle through it.

What we should have is a list of VNs which are not only fairly easy to read, but reasonably good as well.
>>
>>141288271

There's a SEX in it though, and it's also got nameless protagonists so i can self-insert for the kinky stuff.
>>
>>141286591
Monobeno's interesting because most of it is actually really really easy and fine as a beginner moege. But there are some parts with very strong accents and obscure Shinto references which get extremely difficult. So it's actually fine on this list if you just stick to the easy parts.
>>
>>141288377
>That's fine is ease is all you give a shit about. Something being fairly easy to read doesn't mean it's also going to be good enough to make you want to struggle through it.
What the fuck? I'm literally telling you to read things that you find interesting. How the fuck do you think playing Flyable Heart because it's the first in the list is going to be more likely to make you want to struggle through it?

On that topic, why is it that Latin characters are so much harder to read when vertically arranged? It's actually easier to read rotated words than vertically arranged ones.

>>
>>141288538
>>
>>141288473
It's because latin characters have a vertical aspect ratio and they're constructed in a way that puts more shape information along the vertical axis than the horizontal one

there are only a few characters that have more horizontal information than vertical, like m and w

Meanwhile CJK characters are squarish and very balanced

Yeah you look at those and you find something that looks interesting. Obviously that advice is just symbolic and there's no need for it to be "April 2016". The point is that pretty much any moege is going to be relatively easy so you can just pick something that looks like you would like it.

Like fine if you want, here's your easy VN list:
https://vndb.org/p2015
https://vndb.org/p98
https://vndb.org/p386
https://vndb.org/p129
https://vndb.org/p371

>>141288473
I found this
>The Chinese, Japanese and Korean scripts can be oriented in either direction, as they consist mainly of disconnected syllabic units and/or ideographic units, each occupying a square block of space, thus allowing for flexibility for which direction texts can be written
Latin characters don't have as much information per unit. Since you need to smoothly read from letter to letter in order to even make a sound it's awkward when it's vertical.
Maybe it's also because we're not used to it. We didn't learn to read vertically in school so it's weird to read it now.
Honestly I'm not positive why.

>Why don't we have a proper easy VN list?
Because this is /a/ and not /jp/.
Appropriate board for Appropriate content, anon.
The Reading List exists for personal reviews and potential suggestions which can be used for an individual to fashion a list from. More people who commit to adding to it in earnest, the more useful it becomes for such things. What's more, it isn't technically on /a/ so you can even add reviews/suggestions/recommendations with insightful and useful comments without being remotely off topic, as it is off site in and of itself.

Why not take advantage and continue to build up a resource we already have? Seems easier than trying to reinvent the wheel. That's my opinion on the subject, anyway.

And this is /a/ not /lang/, yet here this thread is.

>The Reading List
All the VNs on the reading list are rated upper intermediate to expert in difficulty. The only exception is the ones in pic related which seem to have been copy-pasted from someone's post and have a question mark next to the difficulty rating suggesting that the person who added them hasn't read them and doesn't know for sure how hard they are.
>>
I'm really frustrated right now at how much I'm getting wrong in Anki lately. I'm getting over half my cards wrong. How can I get better at Anki when I'm starting to fail really hard at it?

It's a bad sign if you're forgetting more than what you're remembering.

The first thing that comes to mind whenever someone mentions bad retention in Anki is that they've set the new cards/day number way too high. How many new cards are you doing a day?

Today it gave me 100 new cards. This is obviously too much for me looking back.
>>
>>141289342
>Why do you think I'm interested in a list of easy reading material?
Rec threads don't belong on /a/, fucktard. Use a search engine.
>>
>>141289313
I use mnemonics for the readings too. Japanese has so few sounds that you can easily build up a set of stock mnemonics for every possible reading, after which imagining a mnemonic image for each word takes like 10 seconds.
>>
>>141289346
Yeah, 100 is way too much. It might be doable if you know all the kanji being used, but otherwise it's not a good idea. Don't do any new cards for a few days until your retention rate improves to at least 75%. After that, start adding new cards again at the default pace of 20 cards a day.

>If we can't use this thread to compile Japanese learning materials, then what is the point of it?
So fucking do it, moron.
Don't expect others to do it for you. We aren't here to spoonfeed retards who can't use their fucking brain. Either add to the compendium of insightful commentary that can be helpful for your desired list from experience, or use a fucking search engine to read from the thousands of user reviews of various "entry level" VNs, read some of them, then write up an entry that you think adds value to the current reading list.

It's not fucking rocket science. If you want something done, do it yourself.

>>141289612
Can't texthook manga. The thread has been full of tertiary faggots looking to machine parse their fap fuel who aren't adept enough to be accepted on /jp/, for a while now. >>

its taboo to say here, but I strongly recommend not learning kanji until you've gotten quite a bit of experience under your belt.

You can change your anki deck settings to give you the furigana for your anki words. I think this'll help push you forward a lot faster.

I know at least 2k word's pronunciation, and now that I'm going back to learn kanji - it's a breeze now.

I recommend going through all of tae kim's before trying to tackle manga. And if you have a friend who know's japanese, ask them for help. At first you'll probably need some help to get past slang/other bullshit.

I have a friend from Japan who is coming to stay with me in the NY. We met in Japan last summer. She speaks very little English and wants to come here for three weeks for intense immersion and study.

My worry is that I won't know enough Japanese for speaking. I can speak it well enough to get around, but not enough to have any sort of deep conversation for more than a few sentences.

I have three months until she gets here. What do I study to increase my speaking and listening fluency?
>>
>>141302517
Speak with your dick.
>>
>>141302517
When put in the situation where you have to speak it comes a lot more naturally than you may think

I'm sure it would be fine if you just used a combination of the Japanese you know and the little English she knows, it's not like you're going to be talking about anything too crazy anyway

For writing and reading practice you could try hellotalk, you'll get a bunch of jap bitches adding you without even having to do anything, it's really useful although it can get boring really quick
>>
>>141302517
>intense immersion
What does that mean? Getting shagged by strong American cocks?
>>
>>141297730
kanji is not the hardest part of japanese
>>
>>141302602
I'm pretty good at reading and writing actually, that's my strong point when it comes to Japanese.

The only speaking and listening I've picked up is from having studied so much about writing and from watching a bunch of anime. Spending a few months in Japan helped with that too. But I'm still nowhere near fluent.

>>141302648
It means we're not really doing anything except studying. And banging like rabbits.

Are you saying that how words are pronounced are the hardest part of a language?

>>141302757
>You could use hellotalk to find some bitches
Or not. This isn't Facebook.
>>
>>141302770
The fact kanji have multiple readings and the combination of two or more kanji often results in the readings being unpredictable is the hardest part of the language
>>
>>141302800
no
grammar is
if the entire language had a phonetic system it wouldn't be much easier to learn, it'd just have a lower barrier to entry
>>

Okay then. I was asking for clarification, so cheers for that. I agree in a way. Maybe not hardest but it is the hardest for myself, in terms of mental loading. I have a deck with kanji to readings, kanji on the front with the number of "official" readings and I have to recall them, which is sitting at around 76%, the lowest in terms of retention out of all of my reviewing.

>>141302820
>grammar is
I find vocab much more overbearing than grammar, but maybe that is just me. Working through the DoJG deck, that I am stubborn and want a base familiarity with all the words in any given example sentence means that working through the Intermediate and Advanced cards are a lot slower due to adding a lot of extra vocab cards in a side deck for reviewing as to come somewhat familiar before reading through and reviewing the grammar cards.

So far it seems that Japanese grammar has a nice flow to it. Maybe I just enjoy the language structure itself, which lends a certain form of fluidity in its aggulation.

I had a friend who I stayed with in Japan for the first week. He introduced me to a few of his friends, one of which had a cute younger sister she had brought along. I pulled the Japanese male superiority card, and kept saying she was cute and I'd like to get to know her, until they finally both thought it was a good idea. They're so moldable, them Japanese. 頑張って, anon.

Has anyone else here given up before? I'm sure there must be some of you. I'm wondering if you've experienced the same thing as me.

I recently started back again, and it feels like my ability to understand the language has actually improved over the several month break I took. I'm retracing my steps through Core right now, and words which I was having a really hard time with before and/or kept mixing up with other words are no longer a problem for me. My formerly ~70% correct percentage now exceeds 90% somehow. On top of that, I've been going through grammar resources again to refresh my memory and everything just feels so much more intuitive and easy to absorb than it did last time.

I've been reviewing my RTK deck, as I stopped due to doing core more. It's far easier to "relearn" than learn for the first time, so it's not so bad.

I want to remember those semi uncommon characters more easily, so when I encounter them later it will be a breeze. Also adding in Japanese keywords while I review, makes it far less bland.

Listening to a lot of Japanese helps your listening
Listening to a lot of Japanese helps your listening even if you are using comprehension aids
That's why VNs can help your listening plenty too.

The only way it wouldn't help your listening is if you only read and ignore what is being said, but as long as you play each line until you can understand it spoken (with or without having read the line) you are improving your listening.

Listening with English subs is fine actually. It isn't inefficient, again as long as you are actually listening and making sure you catch every word. Like to take it to an extreme if a Japanese native who also happens to know English were to watch with English subs would you say they aren't listening?

The problem with English subs is that unless you are already fairly advanced, you just won't be able to understand what japanese words are being said just from English subs. But of course in that case listening raw wouldn't help much either would it. Thus Japanese subs.

>>141310015
You are wrong.
>>
>>141309942
I didn't say anything was bad, I said they were inefficient. You could make an argument from an enjoyment standpoint, sort of like how people say reading is "better" than anki, even though on an hour-to-hour comparison anki is much more efficient than reading would be. But more enjoyment = less burnout, etc. If you're talking about pure listening efficiency, subtitles of any kind are not good. You want to be able to understand the words without any help. It's honestly not that much different than the people who use furigana or something to help with reading.
>>
>>141309850
I've found plenty. The options are live TV, which means you either watch one person's current pick but hours later so it's the middle of the night when it's the afternoon in your country, or the odd leak of a Chink subscription service that lags to complete unusable shit but at least offers a decent range of channels and weekly catchup.

Then you have sites that upload actual shows to streaming sites, but anything older than 6 months will have been removed already on most, if not all of the providers. The best option here is FC2, but you can only watch 2 fucking videos a day, and the loading is slow.

Like, maybe I could waste my time on PD instead, but I really can't be fucked with that.

Anyway, I'm serious, TV and books are way easier for me to understand. Well, not news shows, but for example that Lucky Star clip. I'd type it up if I had an IME on this pc.
>>
>>141310057
But you're straight wrong. How is still not being able to understand a word after replaying the same 10 second section 10 times "efficient"?
Is it not more efficient to just look at subtitles to check what that word you were missing was?

And you're also making some pretty heavy claims with absolutely no evidence.

> You want to be able to understand the words without any help.
You want to be able to read without a dictionary but that doesn't mean you shouldn't use a dictionary to learn.

>>

I mean, do you think it's better to watch without subtitles even if you are a beginner who doesn't know the vocabulary and can' understand shit? If you are early in your study watching anime with Japanese subs would just be like reading practice PLUS a bit of extra listening practice. Whereas watching raw would just be practice in frustration I guess?

As an advanced learner I leave subs off because they are distracting but it is useful to have them to turn on if I really can't get a section.

Because I want to learn how to write, of course. It's not the most efficient way for sure, but I find it helps my retention and I don't mind doing it. It's actually relaxing in a way.

Label it as autism or whatever other "something wrong with me" you'd like, I'm making progess and enjoying the process.
>>
>>141310221
Writing is part of the language, you fucking sperg. Not everyone here is looking for texthooker fluency.
>>
>10 new cards appear

>adds new cards even though i'm struggling with the current cards

Why does anki do this?
>>
>tfw I'm in Japan and whenever I have to write something I put it into my phone first so I don't mess up
Learn how to write, so you don't become a retard like me.
>>
>>141310383
You can do writing outside of anki. There's no need to slow down your reps considerably if you don't lose your writing skills the moment you close your notebook.
>>141310390
And you can just suck my penis.
>>
>>141310375
Like I said unless either of us posts evidence than this is going no where. I think listening by itself will produce bigger results in the future. Subs help with temporary comprehension, like I said before. I'm done arguing for now though.
>>
>>141310375
Why are you here if you are an advanced learner? Just like advanced learners of other languages, such as English, the learners usually spend their time on site using the target language, instead of lurking beginner places.

You're like a mature eagle afraid to leave the nest.

>>
>>141310472
Why do you have to handwrite things?
>>
>>141310571
It is entirely useless pick up the voab don't do learning the kanji.
>>
>>141310519
Because I'm addicted to 4chan obviously.
>>
>>141310479
Anki is incredibly efficient for the practice of writing characters, you fucking idiot. Unless anon is looking to practice writing as in creative writing, essays, etc. doing it outside of Anki would take vastly more time. That's the entire fucking point of the SRS system: to practice/review things as least as possible for the greatest value.

You're a fucking fool, mate.
>>
>>141310625
Okay I'll start doing it right away. Surely 2-3 hours is a great time investment and very efficient.
>>
>>141310610
Retards like you only shit up threads and become parasitic generalfags. Assess your existence.
>>
>>141310472
that's quite hard cause most of 4chan's users are retarded
>>
>>141310571
Sometimes I need to fill in handwritten forms at my work. It's never anything major, but it happens.

I'm part of an american country which bought a japanese country, I'm over here for a few months teaching them our systems since I have a rough knowledge of the language. I've got someone that is fluent in japanese and english with me most of the time, but sometimes it's easier just to do shit myself. It's annoying though since I need to constantly fly back to america for stupid shit which means my sleep schedule is destroyed.
>>
>>141310693
>Assess your existence.
Haha assess sounds like ass so deep
>>
>>141310535
Speaking from personal experience (so it maybe just me): I did vocab only first and got to a point where I was having a lot of problems with the kanji.

I would mix up kanji with similar radicals / similar readings very frequently to the point it was affecting my anki retention % significantly, like 20% less. More importantly, it was really frustrating me come reps time + it would take longer and be less enjoyable to get through them.

I started RTK and found it really did help me out, moreso when learning new words, 2 kanji compounds in particular. So it had a pretty positive effect on my vocab learning, even if it took longer overall.

However, I thought I was "over the kanji difficulties" hump and started to slack on RTK reviews, and big surprise, the kanji started giving me trouble again.

So my advice is basically: if you have trouble with kanji while learning vocab, try out a kanji learning method, RTK worked for me. Most importantly, don't slack on your reviews for them, doing that ended up biting me in the ass.
>>
>>141310693
Why are you here? It's not like this thread is particularly valuable for people who aren't advanced learners either. Your time would be better spent watching anime.
>>
>>141310724
I don't know why I wrote country instead of company, I'm not part of the Illuminati.
>>
>>141310672
Re-read the anon's post. They straight up admit it's not the -most- efficient way to learn vocab.

However it certainly is more efficient than the alternative to learning writing: haphazard practice outside of anki.
>>
>>141310672
I can write over 3000 kanji from readings with 90% recall rate. The deck I use gets an average of 15 minutes a day in review.

Fuck off back to facebook with your pleb mentality. /a/ isn't a hugbox for manchildren to hide from reality from, or at least it wasn't once. Now the braindead normalfags are the majority and the retards who make up this thread cannot think beyond their dicks, just like every other barely beyond catatonic, TV reared normalfag.

Okay I will abandon writing outside of anki right now because you say it's not as efficient as wasting 3 hours instead of 20-30 minutes in anki.

Why should one ever have multiple Anki decks? Why not unite all your decks in one mega deck (Japanese cards in the same deck as French, history, math, chemistry cards...)?

Pro:
1. Card order becomes less predictable, increasing retention.
2. New links between concepts from two totally different fields can arise by association because of card order (two totally different ones randomly following after one another), increasing retention and creativity.

Contra:
3. Harder to manage, increasing frustration and time consumption. Can be fixed by using tags, especially hierarchical tags (add-on).
4. Harder to filter, same problems. If you want to study something specific, you have to make a temporary custom deck using tag filters. You are also forced to properly tag to do this.

The other claims are trivial, but regarding the second pro claim:
Bliss TV, Lomo T: Long-lasting potentiation of synaptic transmission in the dentate area of the anaesthetized rabbit following stimulation of the perforant path, J Physiol 232(2), 1973: 331–356
(Full text here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/4727084?dopt=Abstract)

Hebbian theory says that what fires together, wires together. I guess it should apply here, too, but I'm not aware of any clinical studies using Anki about that.

The first pro claim requires a study too. Also define creativity.
I will analyze this link with my team of scientists as this is not my primary field of expertise. I will contact you shortly after we do so.
>>141312340
How is this relevant to your claims?
>>
>>141311748
Why not still have subdecks, but under one general "Japanese" branch? So that way you can still have a grammar deck, a kanji deck, a vocab deck, a listening deck etc etc. but able to do what you're proposing.
>>
>>141311748
Good idea, because I study Japanese, French, Italian, Serbian, Russian, Polish, history, chemistry, nuclear physics and microbiology.
>>
>>141295476

that's pretty good actually. sure they are some people who say oh you can do that in hours but just take your time.
for comparison, my classmates on my jap course still struggle with hiragana and katakana even after 1 year of study.

so as long as you get them well studied, just take your time
>>
>>141311748
Stupid idea, if you allocate all of your threads to one task the result will be much better.
>>
>>141312405
>How is this relevant to your claims?
The second study is the direct confirmation that a change of signal transmission is part of the learning process.

>I will analyze this link with my team of scientists as this is not my primary field of expertise. I will contact you shortly after we do so.
Thank you for your cooperation. I knew that you can rely on the 4chan Institute for Science.

Anki can't handle subdecks well, says the manual. Using subdecks leads to predictable card orders, as the beginning of decks are favoured.
>>
>>141312646

Fucking cucks, admitting failure rather than trying to fix it.

>>141312563

The other day I stumbled over "支那".

Is that where our "China" stems from?
>>
>>141314026
No you fucking retard. Japanese didn't invent kanji
>>
>>141314091
I mean the pronunciation of 支那 pretty much exactly matches the pronunciation of China in German (and is reasonably close in English).
It's not marked as "ateji" in rikaichan, so it seems unlikely to be a reverse import.
>>
>>141314026
Yeah sure I asked my Japanese friends they say its accurate lol
>>
>>141314091
Well China calls themselves Chuugoku, so it can't come from that. Besides, Portuguese sailors met the Japanese first, so it's perfectly plausible that they learned China's name from them first before meeting the Chinese themselves.
>>
So when exactly can I get Yotsubato and attempt to read it? I've finished RTK, Genki I&II, and am 1400~ words into the core10k deck. I recall reading that I need like 4k vocab for it. Is that true?
>>
>>141314237
I see, only Japanese words can be imported into European languages. It's very unlikely that it is a Chinese word that got imported by both Japan and Europe.
>>141314316
Yeah because country names don't change at all throughout history.
>>
>>141314417
You don't. Yotsubato is a pile of steaming shit.

>>
>>141314651
Just read anything you are interested in, but be cautious of reading anything related to anime (by that I mean light novels, manga, visual novels)
They have very crude Japanese and that can reinforce or create bad grammar habits.

You have it backwards. Notice the "uk" in the Rikaichan definition. That means it originated from the United Kingdom.
>>
>>141315882
Are you fucking stupid? How can Chinese symbols originate from the UK? At no point in time did they use a writing system similar to kanji.
