The thing he's doing now seems different from his basic imaginary cutting he does without moving his body. It's like taking up swords is a step up from the basic imagination-only slashes, and then the empty-handed swings are a further step above that.
Also I remember Doppo being able to "subdue"/"negate" the imaginary slashes, what was that all about and why can't anyone else doing it?

His pure imagination slashes are complicated; it's best to just put it down as "I can sense that he could kill me right now!" type crap

Everybody's done it in some way or form except for Shibukawa. Remember when Baki instinctively jumped over "nothing" when Musashi stepped into the room? Musashi didn't even bother doing it against Retsu. Yuujiro can do it, he consciously chose not to do it to piss off Musashi; hence his line about "You can't chop, cut, cleave, whatever, without an actual sword in your hand". Pickle is kind of doing it by simply having an unbreakable body, which is something Musashi comments on.

He's always been a good writer. The convict arc was flawless. The realization of Yuujiro's true character in the Raitai was perfectly written. The final arc and Baki vs Yuujiro fight was rife with complex themes and ideas. Whether or not they came across well in the translations is up to debate.

Why do you assume Musashi isn't a genetic freak?
Biology works in bizarre ways, especially in this manga. Baki is small as hell compared to his father, yet comparable in strength. Je Guevaru is just some random guy who ended up becoming one of the strongest in the world. Kaku has no special blood or anything, is 150 years old, and yet he's more-or-less on par with Yuujiro.
Miyamoto Musashi's actual father was also a hardcore warrior (and possibly the inspiration for Niten Ichiryuu), so it would absolutely be easy to justify his superhuman strength genetically even if Itagaki wanted Musashi to just be an anomalous being.
And Musashi is just about as tall as Yuujiro; maybe an inch or so shorter. I think Jack is now the tallest character - Pickle was like 7'6 or something, right? - yet he isn't nearly as strong as any of the above.

Olivia got dealt a shit hand. His whole gimmick is that he's the strongest physically, if you take that away then he's left with nothing, which is exactly what happened in his fight with Baki. I can accept Yujiro overpowering him because Yujiro is what he is but Baki should've beaten Olivia with techniques instead raw power.

I like to think that, in a sense, Baki *did* beat him with technique. Technique of endurance. Baki was brutalized in every fight that he got into. He was used to taking an impossibly hard beating. We've never seen Oliva take a real beating, not once. It's entirely possible that, simply because Oliva rarely took hard strikes as he only ever fought weak people, Baki was able to take more punches.
That aside, Oliva seemed fine the next day, and Baki was still very much fucked up. He won a "match". Musashi would say that Baki lost that fight.

Part of it, I think, was Musashi's hands. They're ludicrously large, and he can control immense amounts of pressure with them. Even Yuujiro's hands are like 70% the size of Musashi's.
Another part of it is that everybody is fucking retarded and didn't look at what happened in that charge. Musashi got pushed back, then slammed his legs onto the wall - using his hand grip with Pickle as a stabilizer - and forced his way off of it to hit Pickle in the head. It's not like he just stood there while being pressed back and lightly headbutted Pickle to knock him down/stop the charge; it took all of his strength to do that.
I think we, as contemporary readers, extrapolate and demand more information from a chapter than earlier readers would have. Can you imagine discussing and waiting for the next release during Hanayama vs Speck here? There would be so much baseless shit-flinging.

He's using twelve plates per barbell, assuming by the size of the plates and Oliva's proportions they're probably twelve 45 lbs plates, he's basically lifting 540 lbs per arm.
If that doesn't seem a lot of weight for simple exercises I don't really know what is, considering we're talking about a man who could bring down assault helis by pulling a chain attached to them.
