crack theory: ging's power has something to do with whale island and possibly the deaths of his parents. i think he's had nen since before he left for the hunter exam, and acquired it somewhere on the island. it may have some connection to the dark continent. mysterious creatures, hidden ruins/catacombs, and strange artifacts are all possibilities.
gon might discover these and regain his nen/an objective thanks to them. it'd give him SOMETHING plot relevant to do while there. i have no idea what exactly he'd find, but it's something significant.
