I tried to read the manga after finishing the anime but I just couldn't get through mahjong
I loved Kaiji but found Akagi to be somewhat boring. It has much less tension because you know Akagi always has the situation under control and is also more limited due to being a show that only deals with mahjong while Kaiji explores all kinds of psychological games. That and the pacing is really shitty sometimes, especially at the last arc.
