Shinkai is very much like Miyazaki in that he makes the same movie every year or two.
Makoto Shitkai films barely have animation in them, it's mostly just beautiful photo-realistic backgrounds.

Calling someone "the next Miyazaki" is a surefire way to discredit yourself as a journalist.
Either way Shinkai is alright, I'm not super fond of his movies but they look good and he excels at delivering atmosphere. As far as "innovator not imitator" goes, I'd disagree. Lost Voices felt horribly derivative.
