Any reasonable critique of Haruhi must take the cultural milieu into account. You might think the show is "overated" because it is "generic," but the fact is it is generic precisely because of its influence on the genre. Everything from the animation style, the clubroom-for-a-fake-club setting, the SoL structure in a story filled with exciting sci-fi adventures... all these things no longer seem special when viewed alongside subsequent anime that feature them.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is often accused of being "overrated" for the same reason, i.e. "it is *just* a show about fourteen year old schoolkids piloting cool robots to save their city.
No one is saying Haruhi or NGE are flawless, but unless you take their genealogy into account - what came before them and what came after them - seminal shows will always seem "overrated."

Just realized something while reading LN.
Haruhi with her maniacal attitude, endless energy, and "I can't afford to lose" mentality, is basically Miles Naismith Vorkosiganwho happens to be one of my favorite lit charactersin a skirt.
And this gives interesting perspective on her character, because from Mad Miles' point of view, most of his crazy ventures were kinda rationalor at least rationalized pretty good.

What I love about Haruhi is that on the surface, it looks like a standard SoL with random supernatural elements. If you look further, its actually about how Haruhi goes from a megabitch and closed off to everyone to opening up more and finding the fun in normal life.
The mystery is also built up beautifully with a 10/10 climax that is completely lost if you watch it in chronological order.

The way Kyon's understanding of time travel develops is rather spectacular.Kyon knows that he will need to go back to the Disappearance world with the Asahinas-san in order for the ending to make sense, and he gets paranoid about not having a chance to do so. Then he wraps his head around the concept of predetermined events being inviolable, and realizes that as long as Haruhi doesn't observe any obvious time paradoxes, everything will be daijoubu. Then he realizes that big Asahina-san's existence proves that Haruhi doesn't fuck up the world too badly, and he becomes almost cocky about the whole thing.
Then that model starts to break down, and shit gets really crazy.
