It started fine, then dwelled into teenage angst, which is also fine, since the guy became a teen, but the self-loathing went to insane level. That´s the problem, the focus on the brothers got lost somewhere, and without the brothers, you couldn´t give too much fuck about the story. 03 knew what the readers wanted, and gave it to them. Brotherhood fights were nice, but since it followed the manga, it became shit at the same place the manga became shit. But Brotherhood even butchered the beginning just to rush to the action.

It felt a bit sudden with the timeskip, like with a lot of manga that end with a time skip it feels like it was a case of the editor telling the author their time is up get it done.
I do agree it at least delivered on the MC realizing that mindset was not sustainable and he had to grow past it.
More I think on it there's not many manga that for me ended in a satisfying manner or didn't crap out on their main theme.
While in Chobits Hideki was a shallow dumbass for the sake of reader insert it did ask deeper questions of the impact of persocoms through other characters.

Yeah, I know people bitch at you when people tend to say they liked the 03 anime better than the manga, but at least it knew how to keep itself focused. Ed had a more consistent arc, and Al felt more like an actual character. Yeah it ended up focusing on other characters from time to time, but those characters had heavy ties to the Elrics. The last three episodes were far more tense than the last several chapters of the manga. And i really hate saying that cause I tend to prefer manga over anime in general.

I really loved Punpun.
It's the only manga I've ever read that properly conveyed the feeling of despair in a believable way, and I only liked it more once I read it in Japanese and got to read the poignant phrases without the terrible translation butchering them.
Every time something goes wrong, it's never contrived. Both sides are shown, every failure on Punpun's side is properly shown as someone else's success, as an accidental stepping on Punpun's toes.
The way he actually keeps trying despite knowing his lack of potential, the way he pretty much stumbles through life, I couldn't believe how accurately it depicted depression while every other work (both western and eastern) still seems to think depression = "Bohoo I'm so sad look I'm crying".
When I actually read some of the reactions to it I was mystified. Anyone calling it edgy because it's dark, or that it's bland because "Everything just goes wrong all the time" must have read it with astounding superficiality.
It's probably the same people who call OMK shit, saying the broccoli girlfriend reveal was a shitty twist. It kind of reveals that they're unable to comprehend at all the world they're reading about, or any of its characters.

I have a giant backlog, when I'm in a mood for a certain something I dive in it and start reading what pleases me most at that time. The problem is I tend to bing-read/watch things (for a day or two non-stop), then I lose all of a sudden my interest in that specific something and never look back on it- it's like that feeling after you come and your mind suddenly clears up. The latest example is De-de-de-de Dead Demon Destruction: read like 3 tomes in day a month back and since then I don't care about it, even while the story just started getting good. I think I have the highest dropped/watched ratio of mankind.
Pic related, dropped the series in the last episode cause I went to sleep for that day and the day after that I couldn't care less for the ending.

I honestly can't say, but it has to be directed by someone really good at what he does and animated by a very capable studio. The pacing and visuals are really complex in blame, and even myself at some points got lost by the sheer immensity of the events going on.
Plus it's not going to be a normie hit, and probably not even an otaku pleb popular series; I think that I'm gonna stick to the manga if the first chapter doesn't looks good enough.

Accurate representation of sadness in media is rare enough, but in Japanese manga it's almost non-existent.
In a majority of occasions big enough to be almost the totality of cases, 'sadness' is just a plot device with no head or tail, badly incorporated in characters that don't behave like it.

It was a bit of a hyperbole, but making it a point of its own would have diluited the post and made for too big of a tangent.
My point was that depression is often depicted as something passionate, something visible and that produces a lot of 'action', be it through sobfests, or manic episodes.
And even when it's done better, something always feels 'off' to me.
I guess Punpun was the one I found the closest to what I personally think is accurate, that permeating feeling of apathy that is only rarely interrupted by frustrating mental screams at life.

It's pretty obvious how the opinions have changed over time. Of course there are valid criticisms just as before but it the contrarian effect becomes obvious when you start to see kneejerk angry reactions every time it's posted - usually associating the series with reddit or MAL.
This happens most often with series that are considered "deep", because people will stop believing that it's deep once they realize it has mainstream appeal.

Despite all that, the story of the world itelf, often told directly through the art, is goddamn incredible.
And yes, I am aware that a Blame! Movie will come out. It will not be good. A movie could capture the action sequences well, but the real meat of Blame was in the art itself. A movie simply cannot capture the sense of time required for Blame without the audience giving up and walking out of the theather. But then everything is aliens and great conspirations and frankly the constant oversexualization of female characters got me tired, I felt like it was really forced and collided with the brutality that the plot tried to convey. It could have been much better imho, but everyone has their taste and must be respected.
