Fair enough, but then again in any story what's important is caring about the characters. A character with a good romance story backing up his motivations in sports can be a big plus, the same way a boring, plot-invasive romance can put you off from reading even if the sport parts are good.

Sport can be sub-theme device to motivate the main theme of a story. Vice versa. Since we are talking about Rikudou here, it odiously romance is not the core subject of the manga. The drama is just merely a side dish that accommodate with boxing.
