Pre-2000 Anime Thread

What are some old anime you are currently watching? Or if you're watching nothing what is your favorite?

Just finished watching Geist, it wasn't anything special, although seeing anime Billy Idol kill Stevie Wonder was pretty neat.
I'm also 3/4 through Patlabor TV which is really great. I miss Kanuka though.

Watching a Getter Robo episode every now and then. Loved Combattler V and Voltes V, but nothing has filled that void yet.
Also sparsely watching Cardcaptor Sakura. The majority of it doesn't appeal to me, but I love the magic elements when they pop up. You can feel the love they put into the show.

Same principle with this one. Its okay on its own, but if you watch the original Gundam first, it gets a whole new level of depth.

Yes, Ruri is a bad Rei Ayanami clone, thats what makes her best girl
>>
>>140943604
The first couple of episodes are pretty generic. Most of the cast (Ota in particular) don't have nearly as much depth as they do in the movies. However, it gets a lot better as it goes on.

Not him but I love it. I've never seen the movies so I can't compare them but I love how the tv show manages to find a nice blend of the mundane stuff (ordering food, characters personal lives, drinking competitions) with the action and plot moving episodes. I really love the super outlandish ones too ie. Noa and Kanuka are chased by a dragon, Goto and the crew discover a haunted burial site etc. I'm only on episode 30 so far and my only complaint is the team dynamic with the new girl isn't as good as it was with Kanuka.

>>
>>140942795
I'm watching this currently.
It is subpar compared to modern anime in almost every respect: art, animation, music, direction, storytelling, voice acting.

At least Gundam had some interesting characters and an interesting plot. The only redeeming point I can see in Ideon is finding the few key elements that inspired Evangelion.

Not really true. Generally the only places you're going to find webm-bait sakuga and multitone shading is movies and ovas, but old tv broadcasts actually looked good for their budget starting from the early 80s. You can make simple styles look good with proper talent. Also, things stuck on LD or VHS rips betrays the actual quality behind the animation.

You don't get pure visual vomit like this.

I finished Fist of the North Star last month (watched the whole anime over the course of the year, and then picked up the manga where the show left off).

Fucking fantastic series. It has so much heart underneath the gratuitous violence. A friend pointed out to me that it's basically a Western drama with Kung-Fu instead of guns, and I can kind of see it.

One thing that still really bothers me: which backstory of Raoh and Toki is considered canon?

I think you'll enjoy it. I loved it as a kid, and I was afraid it wouldn't hold up if I watched it again without my nostalgia goggles. But it totally does. All the characters are lovable; most of the joy of the show comes from watching them interact. Somehow the monster-of-the-week format never gets boring.

Zambot 3 is pretty great. I was not expecting such a high bodycount every episode, and kids dying left and right. Around episode 7 or 8 it got pretty dull, but picked up in the early teens again.

Also I started watching Casshan and it's fantastic so far.

And it is sadly 90% shitposting. You can't really discuss anything on there anymore. It got really bad a few years back and never recovered, especially since it has zero moderation. The generals of all things are the least shitpost-filled threads. Also the 70s/80s thread.

/a/ has better mecha discussions than /m/ does generally, sadly.

3x3 Eyes desperately needs to be fulled animated. Get Mappa to do it when they're finished with Ushio and Tora.

>You can tell love was put into it in older anime

I feel like the digitization has taken the human touch out of animation. The people working on it are too far removed from the final product. Digital animation (and CGI especially) feel too... mechanical? Artificial? I'm not sure what I'm trying to say, but it definitely lacks that "love" that you'll find in traditional cel animation. It's too perfect, it's too clean.

Which isn't to say that there's not good digital animation out there, because there is. I just think it's harder to make your love show with digital animation.

Season 1 is probably the weakest season of Doremi (still good though).

The best parts are when it drops the magical girl thing and just does character episodes.

She gets a bit better as time goes on, but that's mostly as Sailor Moon rather than as Usagi. I honestly like her whiny crybaby character. It's fun seeing her turn from a weeping idiot into a superhero.

I've seen it all except Bio hunter.

Alita and 3x3 are half assed adaptations, Keaton and Crying Freeman are boring. City Hunter gets way too repetitive. Guyver is too much of a dumb action show.

VHD and Wicked City are okay, but they're just movies worth watching for their visuals and not proper shows.

A-ko, BGC, and Dirty Pair are worth watching. Takahashi shows are good if you like Takahashi.
>>
>>140947283
People bring it up all the time, along with the manga board idea. The answer to both of those is that splitting the community just makes more of a hassle and won't magically induce a wave of people watching and wanting to talk about obscure shit.

I enjoyed it, melodrama and all.

Did anyone else re-watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes season 1 in time for the novel? I think that was a good idea since I wouldn't have been able to spot the differences like Merkatz being with Rhinehard from the start or the extended backstory on Rudolf in the prologue chapter among other changes like Rhinehard asking Kircheis if he could do what Rudolf did in front of a Rudolf statue instead of a grassy slope.

I recommend Ideon a lot and it's one of my favourites, be prepared for the plot to stagnate a little towards the end but other than that it's a true classic.

Opening theme is one I could never get tired of.

How does the Hokuto no Ken anime compare to the manga? I was actually surprised by how many sad moments and tear jerker scenes there were, people weren't kidding. Didn't really care much for the plot post-Raoh since it seemed like the author was struggling to make it interesting, I liked how one of the final villains was a nice callback to how the early villains looked in the series.

>>
>>140952638
The Shin arc in the anime is much different than in the manga, but it's done better. In the anime, he actually gets character development, instead of being just a motivation for Ken to do shit. The plot is also restructured a bit to make him a bigger bad guy, and smaller bad guys before him become his minions.
Also a lot of gore and head-exploding is semi-censored in the anime because it was actually considered too violent for TV.
So, manga is better for the sake of pure violence. And the last 2-and-a-half volumes were never animated, so you'll end up reading it at some point if you pick up the series.

It's weird because there are what I can assume to be DVD rips on Youtube that have no echo in the audio for whatever reason. It's a shame because the show looks terrific but the audio sounds like it was recorded on a laptop microphone, and I have no idea if it's something with the FLAC or not.

>Generally the only places you're going to find webm-bait sakuga and multitone shading is movies and ovas

Just like 80s and 90s anime.

>Also, things stuck on LD or VHS rips betrays the actual quality behind the animation.

Stuff like Maze would look like shit even on BD. Ugly shows are ugly regardless of their video format.

>You don't get pure visual vomit like this.

Cherrypicking. I can point to something like Tekkaman Blade as an example of crap 90s animation just as easily as I can point to Hyouka or Hibike! Euphonium as an example of good modern animation. NGNL isn't indicative of trends, nor does it represent modern animation as a whole.

Yes. The only series of note you listed are City Hunter, Dirty Pair, Bubblegum Crisis, Vampire Hunter D (Bloodlust) and Urusei Yatsura. Almost all the rest are mediocre OVAs or movies that were (rightfully) forgotten.

It's obvious that you need to watch more anime.

every anime on that list literally strives far from the norm and mediocrity, and none of them are "rightfully forgotten" because they were all popular and appraised works in the countries they were published in outside of the us at the time of their release. Maybe you should actually take the time in actually watching them instead of reading plot summaries and reviews made by the modern teen audience of mal.

I know it's not anime, but with American CG films you can oftentimes feel the love and effort put into making a good film. I think it's just that Japan is still behind the curve on using CG, and uses it to cut corners rather than using it as a legitimate animated pursuit in itself.

>Why does 80s and 90s anime usually look better than modern anime.
It doesn't unless you're comparing some swanky movies and OVAs to TV anime, as people often do.

>>140945676
Animators still animate the same way they always did. They draw the frames on and pen and paper and then hand them over to the other production staff. The difference between now and then is that now the animation frames are digitized.

Pretty much what I expected from the few episodes I have seen.

Abides by the 90's grit that I think has charm but still feels empty and uninteresting which quickly makes me drop a show.

You watched it because of this thread? I'm honored.

The first few episodes they try to create a plot, then at some point go "screw it, lets make comfy filler" and then a few episodes before the end they go back to a plot.

Keep in mind the animators were trying to replicate the manga artwork, which is why the thing looks and feels more early 1980s instead of 1993.

Yoko Kanno does some amazing work in there, and I think this was Mayaa Sakamoto's first VA gig.

The only thing that didn't hold up were those Cyrano de Bergerac noses of the 90s character designs
>>
>>140967337
I like it without irony, I not claiming it's anything but a 80's B-movie in anime form, but there was no irony to my enjoyment. The "anti-hero" being a flat out war junkie is certainly the logical conclusion when it comes to examining the action hero if we want to get analytical. I'm also a fan of Buichi Terasawa's "Goku Midnight Eye," light on plot and character by Kawajiri's direction give this shallow work much needed flair. The manga/ova takes place in the year 2014, according to the 80s.

Crying Freeman is an entertaining piece of pulp of fiction. It does lack on the suspense, after a while you know Freeman is coming out on top with no problem. That last battle is considered to be pretty iconic, actually.

If you're watching older Macrosses to catch up for Delta, I strongly recommend, after taking a bit of a break, to look into Macross 7.

It's a absolute hate/love kind of things, but it establishes the precedent from which future Macrosses emphasize music on, just as SDF does for establishing the universe

>>140972429
>also MFW I love the original Macross and Plus, but could never get into the later adaptations precisely because of the emphasis on music/idols

>Neko no Ongaeshi is the most overrated anime movie I've ever seen.
I never said it was the best, but it is by no means bad in any way

This is one of the most underrated anime in 90's. Just because it had some similarities with Evangelion, but it's freaking awesome.
In fact, Gekikanger solo is better than a lot of current anime

Oh hey, I actually just got a physical English copy of this recent.
It's pretty good, but the plot is really simple.
It has good fights, strong likable characters, and a good sense of world building and ascetic unity even if majority of it is set in a rather bland desert.
I'd definitely recommend watching it for the fights and characters, but maybe not for the plot. It's pretty much, there is an unstoppable alien, and Iria's got to stop it.
Iria is one of the best examples I've seen of a well written female lead so that's really neat.

The ending is such a mixed bag for me,
because watching the eclipse for the first time was such a wonderful but horrific moment, and then the show just ends on a ridiculous cliffhanger, which got me to instantly go read the manga to figure out what happens next.
It's such an intense ending, albeit abrupt.

I just finished watching that like 2 weeks ago. I really enjoyed it, and I thought that You're Under Arrest was a great example of how to build relationships between characters, especially Natsumi.
The movie was really good too and surprisingly intense.
When I first watched the OVA's I was expecting a buddy cop series, but got Initial D instead. It wasn't until the actual series I got the character interactions I was expecting.

Where did you get this image? I recognize it but can't recall which show exactly.

I don't remember, I saved it a while ago thinking it was nice and never found out what it was in the end.
