I've got a question, /a/. Why are so many dark-skinned anime characters given blue, white, or purple hair? I kind of get the white hair, because it almost always looks good, but is there a specific reason for it? It just occurred to me that a fair number of the dark-skinned characters I can think of have one of those colors for hair.

Because that's not their cultural image of America. They see Americans as blue-eyed, blonde haired, and square jawedthough really that applies to almost all Euros as well.

Because they're supposed to look ambiguously exotic, not like any particular race. It helps with the suspension of disbelief that an Indian guy could be so attractive.

To create contrast, it to draw the viewers attention to areas of interest like shimapan or bra embroidery so features or easier to distinguish.

It also helps a lot for mangaka's, when you're an avid manga reader like many in Japan you read the pages a lot more quickly which can lead to confusion about who's doing what. The contrasted hair helps calirify

Variety among several other reasons. I think part of it is why weird hair colors are used in general, it can sometimes be used to differentiate characters or just that natural hair colors are pretty dull looking. If it's just a design choice, I kind of want to see them push it even further and start doing pink or blue skin or something.

They do, sometimes. That really applies to most western or Anglo countries to varying extents, though. White people in the modern era tend to be a bit chubby at the very least.
