What's interesting in this show is not the spies, it's the context.
I'm sure Production IG choose to adapt this novel because thay wanted to make an anime about WWII and have some sort of source material as a guidance.
I don't think you guys saw the live-action movie they made of Joker Game but it's been translated, I saw it and it's hilariously bad. The anime is much more interesting, even if it has flaws.

I really can't conceive the idea of a live action being in any way good. Ironically, I would asume the "X historical period of Japan with no crazy fantasy elements" live-action would be the "less bad" exception (which is the kind of genre that Joker Game is in)
