There are multiple choices from where to begin;
>Fate/Stay Night VN
>FSN UBW anime
>Fate/Zero book
>Fate/Zero drama cd
>Fate/Zero anime
You could even watch the FSN Deen anime first like I did. But I have to say that the VN is magnum opus of Nasu, it's very long and if you don't have motivation to read it you will drop it. So it might be better to watch Fate/Zero or UBW first and if you're interested you can read the VN.

Read the VN if you have a lot of time and a good attention span. All in all it doesn't matter, the Zero spoils the heavens feel movies coming out soon but I think is a more entertaining watch the Stay Night, which is still entertaining on its own.

F/Z is better if you read the VN I think. Since you kinda want to know why Kerry was a bad person according to Saber after you adore him in the novel. UBW is fine on it's own I think, but the adaptation isn't meant for people who haven't at least read or watched the Fate route.

In most cases this kind of appeal is usually elitist red herring, but in this case I cannot stress enough how important is to read the VN(s) first and unspoiled, since if you don't do it correctly, then you'll miss the appeal of the series completely and you'll forever be a filthy secondary or zero fag.
Only salty secondaries that became fans will tell you not to read the VN, regardless of what series you're talking about.

They become fans of a series by getting into the adaption instead of reading the source material, then they feel forever inferior to those that actually did, so to make themselves feel better they try to convince new people to fall into the same trap they did.
Always read the VN first.
Before you watch/read anything, make sure to watch the Tsukihime anime, you'll be pretty confused without it.
People are going to tell you to read the VN, but the VN is pretty hit or miss. Read the VN if you can tolerate the following things:

What's Nazu's obsession with that? I've read F/SN, F/HA and I'm somewhere in Arc's route in Tsukihime and it seems to be a running theme for the MC to interpret "be gentle" as "please slice me in half with your excalidick o mighty one"

Not really, if you don't like VN then don't bother. If you do then arguably the VN is all you need.
Still, I favor anime over VN so I recommend
First the original 2006 version,
Then Fate/Zero,
Then Unlimited Blade Works either the 2010 movie for the actiony feel or the 2014-15 show for more characterization.
With some Carnival Phantasm and Fate/kaleid liner in between for some much needed lighthearted humor.
If you want to enjoy Fate Zero or UBW at all then yes.

My greatest regret with this franchise is finishing the VN before Zero came out. Don't bother reading it first, possibly ever. UBW is a serviceable enough adaptation (if too slow and moody), HF should be fine too, and Fate is shit anyway.

Either start with the VN or the 2006 anime. Zero, in the first episode or not long after, basically spoils 90% of the mysteries that make the story interesting in the first place.
Starting with UBW anime is okay I suppose, but it is mostly written based on the assumption you know the first route already.

Fate/Zero is nothing like the rest of the franchise and is pretty much written with the assumption that you have already read the VN. It also sets up events for all three routes of F/SN, so if you decide to go anime only you're doomed to be sort of underwhelmed from the jump to Zero to UBW.
So it's a pretty terrible entry point.
UBW is not much better though because (like the source material) it assumes you have read/watched Fate. It's not unwatchable or anything, but you won't really get the full experience without the context.
F/SN was written to be a VN. A lot of its plot beats rely on the fact there are multiple routes and a shit ton of bad ends. Tooooooooons of stuff is covered in monologues. The anime adaptions are alright, but they are straight up an inferior way of experiencing the story.
Now, mind you, the story of F/SN is not all that good. It does cool things with the concept of multiple routes, has a great setting, and some amazing setpieces, but the actual plot itself is pretty meh at most. Nasu wrote the damn thing 12 years ago, he's gotten much better over the years. But sadly his better material is never going to be translated.
