When he does nice things, he's a fucking savior. If he can't win a fight he wins the favor of creatures he fucked over for some reason, and they have a big fat fucking party. I've heard the term "Mary Sue" thrown around a lot, but Gon really takes the cake with that term.

I've always felt like what makes a "Mary Sue" has less to do with how super powered and seemingly perfect a character is, and more to do with how loved, fawned over, and worshiped the character is by others. Particularly in the case of fan fiction, which is where the term originated. If a character is ultra capable but you don't get the feeling that he/she is destroying the agency of nearly every other figure in the story by creating worshipers that orbit the person in question, then said character isn't actually a Mary Sue.
So in anime terms harem protagonists fit the bill better than anything.
