GuP's main strength was that it transmited to the viewer the passion for the show's gimmick (the tanks). Even people who didn't knew about, or liked, tanks before watching GuP, usually winded up interested in them, or even in full "Panzer Vor! The tanks are innocent!" mode.
Hai-furi, however, has failed (so far) to transmit the same passion for ships.

I think it's because of the scale and numbers of people. The bigger they are and more long distance the fighting, the less relatable. Plane combat (at least if we're talking WW2 era) is up in your face dogfighting. Tank battles are further, usually fairly medium-distance artillery fighting with the exception of urban combat.
Ship battles are usually two boats who can't even see each other (over the horizon) firing shots over miles or launching torpedoes across huge swathes. You can't fit that on a screen without compressing everything.

More likely it's because the show just has a different focus. GuP was a sports anime where the sport was simulated tank battles, so the tanks get really highlighted in that scenario.
Haifuri seems more like suspense thriller with some SoL on the side. The main focus is on the characters and how they're dealing with the situation their in, while the ship itself is more of a vehicle that carries them from crisis to crisis. Given time the ship might develop it's own character, since similar shows like Yamato, Macross, or Zipang have a similar effect, but it hasn't been long enough for that to happen.

I think that's specifically why the writers picked a Destroyer. Destroyers typically have a lot more opportunity to get up close in order to fight than other ships.

Yeah usually with in a few miles, but ships are pretty large objects, so a couple of miles allows for all the visuals you might want out of a fight, and really I think Haifuri has done a pretty good job of making the fights exciting even though, looking back, you hardly see the enemy in most fights.

Just watched this episode and I'm wondering how the hydrophones could pick up submarine propeller sounds when it was tailing them.
Wouldn't their own propeller drown out the sounds?
