My high school did this for most classes, posted everyone's current grade with what they scored on assignments/quizes/tests. Eventually they switched to student id's, but those were alphabetical order. Some teachers must of learned, because they eventually got randomized.

Anti-intellectualism is pretty strong in the US. In most of the developing world and East Asia intelligence is valued strongly as a means to improve one's station in life or to prevent familial shame.
>>
>>140652226
it's also relatively common.
>>
>>140651969
Why do you think bullying is a thing in Japan? Japan is 10 years behind America when it comes to stuff like this.
>>
>>140651969
My school used to have rankings but only displayed the top 3. Its a good method to praise the smart without shaming the stupid. Also, some kids care more about grades and ranking than others.

>>
>>140652299
This, especially among the poors. Which is good because the sooner we put an end to public education the better off we'll be for it. Privatizing education is something we should of been doing years ago but Bush, the liberals and the ignorant just keep on thinking every little kid was entitled to half assed state education payed for by the tax payers and run by shitty adults who couldn't hack it as private tutors or university teachers.
>>
>>140651969
Public shame is one of the best motivators, dumbass.
>>
Why is Jun such a hot-headed twat?

>Fights his best friend routinely
>Scowls at any guy who so much as looks at Tomo
>Pushes Misuzu into the rain
>Steals Misuzu's scrunchy multiple times
>Steals Carol's hair ribbon
>Attacks and brutally injures 5 upstanding gentlemen who were only interested in confronting Tomo about her uncalled for attack on one of their group
>>
>>140652299
It still bothers me how those supposedly developed countries such as South Korea, China, Japan give so much shit about familial shame and shit like that. No wonder so many of them leave their countries to live in America.

It's actually all true and it's working. The big powers in the country love how stupid the citizens are. In fact, not only are the citizens stupid but they're also very, very much complacent and lazy. They have no positive ideals or really any desire for anything positive unless it's violent and causes people they hate to get hurt or inconvenienced. They've become an entire nation of shitposters and neckbeards. .

It's easy for people in the individualistic West to look down on what a more collective society like China values. But likewise what we consider independence is seen as selfish and near-sighted to them.

I thought it was backwards, In my school I was tall, smart, handsome, and really reserved, why did I got bullied so much?
>>
>>140654081
Yes. Because pop media would have you believe that smart people are targeted by endless bullying because they're all awkward freaks and not those American-Asian kids and rich white kids who play five instruments; literally know Kung-fu or some other martial art; play tennis and soccer competitively, play basketball recreationally, and swim for the school; attend Model UN, business clubs, math clab, etc.; and are loved by the entire school because they save cats and clean up highways on weekends.

The smart kids who get bullied in school get bullied because they're autistic, not because they're smart.

grammar flubs are incredibly common here for some reason.
>>
>>140654081
It's true. I had one of my HS teachers ask me if I was okay with what my grade would be, as she felt guilty, because the only way she could curve the class so that 90% of the class wouldn't fail resulted in me having a significantly lower grade.

Public schooling systems currently cater to the lowest common denominator. Simply look at the no child gets left behind act. Overall they focus on trying to get as many people as possible to be not-failing, even if the cost opportunity of doing so means that the more intellectual students get ignored of even dragged down.

We'd be better off if we upped the standards and had the dumber kids spend more time and effort to keep up.
>>
>>140654576
because you were really reserved
Not being social makes you stand out as both a weirdo and an easy target. being tall instead of average probably didn't help you either

They even issued him several warnings about stirring up public unrest and shit when he kept talking about his theory asking for him to come back when he had more evidence. Scriptures had been reinterpreted due to advances in science before, and education and religion was pretty much one and the same back then and pretty much all the knowledge in the world was recorded by monks. And guess what, it turned out he was right and they amended their interpretations later.

That's a totally fallacious view of the case of Galileo and heliocentrism.

The truth is, Galileo had both his supporters and his detractors among the clergy. His claims that heliocentrism was the correct model for Earth's relationship with the sun were extremely well founded and, in fact, his imprisonment came about as a result of geocentrists' own logical fallacies. In Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World systems, Galileo presented both arguments, but the arguments were geocentrism were fundamentally flawed, and people saw this when they read the work. He intended the book to be fair and balanced, an historians generally agree that he was true to his intent, but the heliocentric argument was simply stronger, whereas the geocentric one was a tangle of logical fallacies.

His imprisonment came about because, paranoid and fearful over recent political debacles, Pope Urban VIII saw this as an attack on his legitimacy and decided to dispose of him so as to not appear weak.

My Art teacher did this.

They would put all the works on a wall. Gather everyone around it and pick of each work one by one giving feedback. Starting with the worst.

It was appropriately called the wall of shame.

If anything I would think the imprisonment had more to do with making the entire book have a thinly veiled barrage of insults against Pope Urban (Eg Imagine if there was retarded dumbass character named Pope Bourbon) when Pope Urban was the one sponsoring Galileo's shit so that he could properly prove heliocentric theory.
>>
>>140667688
Except it wasn't. Historians almost uniformly agree that, while Pope Urban took the document as an insult, it wasn't intended as such.

Detractors claimed that Galileo had named the geocentrist advocate character in the book Simplicio as an insult against the Pope and geocentrism, when in fact the character was named after the philosopher Simplicius. It's likely that Pope Urban didn't actually even believe he'd been insulted, but other people certainly did, and he was under increasing pressure to appear strong and authoritative.

There are no implied or direct insults against Pope Urban in the book.

I wouldn't call Galileo's Theory of the Tides remotely well rounded. It didn't answer shit regarding the Stellar Parallax for one.
>>
>>140670269
well, i don't think SImplicio is a name chosen for no good reason
also isn't there a section where he ridculizes the Pope's theory about the moon (or maybe about tides, i can't remember)
>>
>>140672143
He put some words said by some people into Simplico's dialogue. The Pope may be one.

>>
>>140673510
Eh? Wasn't it 1822? Where did you get that date from?
>>
>>140672880
Pretty much. His main enemies were his colleagues who for the most part disagreed with him, even if they were wrong and he was right he wasn't able to provide enough evidence to convince them and so the church didn't do much. But I can see why it would be frustrating for Galileo and why he started stirring up trouble.

https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_Galilei#Riabilitazione_da_parte_della_Chiesa_cattolica

In 1822 they allowed his teachings, and they dropped the books from the index earlier, but only 1992 they acknowledged that they made errors in his process and revoked the verdict.
>>

Tons of people know Kepler.

He's the go-to natural philosopher for when people want to offhandedly mention that yeah science was indeed done during 'the dark ages'.

A good review, mostly. That was a good book.

I think he's got a little bit too much of a boner for the forgottens, though, and it has somewhat tainted his perception of later thinkers. Hannam (and this writer, it seems) seem to have forgotten that it was the Renaissance interest in the ancient past that resulted in the rediscovery of so many exceptional works, many of which had been essentially dropped to the wayside of history by the insanely inefficient method used to document and store them.

The author's snide dig at people who question Jesus' historicity is slightly amusing, considering that it is entirely rational to have such questions. I hate the often-touted idea that "most scholars agree that Jesus existed as an individual." When you examine this claim in detail, you find it's not at all true. There is no strong case for Jesus existing. This doesn't mean he definitely didn't exist - it simply means it's a ration stance to doubt the assumption that he did and want to know more.

The "Dark Ages" was just a term a bunch of Romeaboos thought up to distance so they could suck the Roman Empire's deceased dick. The "Renaissance" was just the increased centralization of towns, literacy rates, and the growing merchant class. The change in lifestyle wasn't even all that sudden.
>>
>>140677700
The Renaissance was significantly more important than that.

But yes, the idea of a non-intellectual dark age shrouding the centuries after Rome's fall is pretty stupid.
>>
>>140678062
I'm not denying it's importance, it's just I hate it when people try to imply the the Renascence was when they suddenly burst out of the black sea of ignorance that was the Dark Ages and lead the world to unparalleled levels of intellectualism.

It didn't help that Galileo published a book where the church's official stance was held by a man named "Simplicius"
>>
>>140679022
Better than Jun - perhaps in the top 20 for Misuzu, Carol still has Japanese problems, so probably not as good.
