He strikes me as the kind of guy that's preternaturally good at flying, but doesn't find enjoyment in it anymore. This tiff with the Windermere guys might be the first real challenge he's ever had, and having to put up with a scrub like Hayate and his dumbass 'I'm only here to fly for me not your mission' shit is a distraction he doesn't want in his sky with him when he has to face those guys again. Alternatively, he might have been just like Hayate at one point and has forgotten it under a mountain of duty, and seeing Hayate like he is flying so freely makes him mad that he doesn't feel that way anymore.

It was to put him in his place and make him realize that there's no such thing as fair in actual combat. Hayate acted cocky and overconfident through his entire training with Mirage. He barely passed and he reacted like it was such a huge accomplishment when he has much more to learn.

It wasn't actual combat though, it was a test, no one was expecting it to simulate actual combat conditions. In actual combat the enemy doesn't shoot paintballs at you either, maybe Messer should've used live rounds instead.

Evolution of Idols:
The most sticking thing I noticed about Walkure, is their designs. While the baseline of the outfits are the same, each girl has their own unique thing going on. However I think their difference in their appearance tells us something more. My theory is that not only does it represent them individual (such as personality, etc) but the evolution of idols throughout the years.
Kaname: Her design is the most basic of walkure. Kaname's design represents the original idols from the 80s and 90s. It correlates with her entire theme of being the most average and normal of the group.
MakiMaki and ReiRei: Both girls design are more modern. The present idols from 2000s to around 2012. More flashy, cute and hightech.
Freyja and Mikumo: Most interesting designs of the group. They represent the new era of idols from 2014 and beyond. Their dual hair color etc.

Nah. Mikumo, Freyja, Makina, and Reina all have large glowing things on their hips -- maybe speakers, maybe speaker pods, maybe fold amplifiers, maybe they control the drones, whatever. Kaname has only a single large glowing thing on one hip, but three smaller ones (one on her arm, one on the outside of each boot).

I'm not contesting Freyja is more popular character. The brief summary for episode 5 doesn't necessarily make her the winner. Misa in SDF wasn't even a contender until around past half of the show. I'm just saying that its much too early to draw conclusions and write Mirage off. Freyja may currently have an advantage over Mirage on their relationship with Hayate but Mirage is still part of the main love triangle and she will get her share of development.

My theory on each of the girls, along with their connections to each other and the role they serve in the show. Feel free to share to your theories, add to mine, or take out things you feel that won't be likely.
Freyja; I actually don't have much for her. They claim that Mikumo is mysterious, but Freyja is just as mysterious as her. When you think about it we don't know much. It's obvious she has a larger role in the story, but I greatly feel that rather that Hayate she will be more connected to Mikumo. I sense a Madoka/Homura vibe from these two. Mikumo might have to sacrifice her voice/fold-wave ability (which almost kills her) but Freyja trades the thing she loves the most (her singing) to save the person she loves the most (Mikumo)
Mikumo: The girl who borrows her voice from the venus Goddess. I believe Mikumo was was biologically engineered. While she is completely human, he dna is a collection of the best genes across the macross universe. Thus she might infant be squid/proto, however only partially. From each species they choose the best genes to construct a human with an incredible amount of fold-wave function. The baseline of her genetics must be related to the windemere guys, the guys from that planet are going to be curious about her hair/fold-wave capability.
ReiRei & MakiMaki: Makina most likely has the highest IQ of the group considering it takes a great amount of intelligence to be an engineer of her level. ReiRei is Makina's favorite creation, thus making Reina an AI created by Makina. Makina failed however to create Reina with emotions thus Reina will never return her love.
Kaname: The most normal of the girls. Shows a happy face, but deeply sad on the inside because her idol career failed but she got a new gig as a fake idol (Walkure is a military group first, idols second).
For people constantly asking why red is leader. The answer is simple, each girl has their own purpose. Purple's is to be the face.

4th - Kaname
5th Reina

I seriously doubt that there'll ever be any official word on where Makina, Kaname, and Reina fall relative to each other. Freyja will surpass them by the end, so the only question is whether Freyja will surpass Mikumo.
