I think Grisha Yeager was a titan who ate a titan shifter at some point and eventually came to his senses within the walls when Shadis found him. If he was a rogue plant like Annie, Bertholt, and Reiner he wouldn't have been so ignorant about the society within the walls. Over time as he recalled the memories of the shifter he ate, he realizes what the shifter's plans were and tracks down the coordinate himself and by the time Wall Maria fell he thought he had prepared everything he needed to for Eren.
What this doesn't account for is that the shifter leader Zeke resembles him too much to be coincidence. They must be related somehow.

Erwin would never seek kids out on his own, but this is just a what-if. Erwin didn't have any responsibility for Marie, who knows if she even had feelings for him. The only thing he abandoned was a possibility.
