Yeah, I think that is true for most countries. It's actually pretty normal in Taiwan, though. They aren't many advertisements for 'anime' outside of bookstores and anime shops, but 'anime-style' ads with cartoon characters are everywhere. A lot of them for bad mobile/web games but sometimes even a mascot for a metro system or used in government notices. You can see salarymen playing cute games on their phones on the metro.

This thread brought up a semi-related memory and it's probably not worth its own thread, so I'll post here:
Back in the early 90s (some time between 92 and 95 most likely) I had a babysitter who'd bring VHS tapes to watch while taking care of me. I was too young to remember anything in detail, but those tapes were of some sort of animated show(s) that I now think may have been anime of some sort. All I can remember is that the show featured ground armies of something that was humanoid-sized but wasn't human (more monsterish) wielding swords and shields. I also remember it featuring a desert at some point, and perhaps even something akin to laser/ray gun weapons, but I suppose that could've been magic of some sort. I don't remember seeing subtitles so it was either dubbed or a western show. Does any of this ring a bell for those familiar with older shows?
