A delinquent wants to fight another delinquent.
Unable to fight outside of school, he is gifted with by a deus ex machina with the delinquent's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls him, and is overjoyed to find out that he wants to fight him as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's call to the delinquent, he only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the delinquent he called is not the same delinquent he wanted to fight. In fact, he doesn't exist in this universe at all. He is the delinquent's alternate universe counterpart, who wants to fight the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of his desire to fight.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to coax their respective selves to fight. While the two chase their targets, DRAMA ensues as they begin to want to fight with each other instead and question the NATURE of FIGHTING.

I do like delinquent stories which are a little bit more realistic, it's a different take on things than stuff like RokuBlues/BBH etc. Blue Spring is kind of real but more fucked up because it's Matsumoto Taiyou.
I reckon some of Takahashi Hiroshi's work are able to find a balance between over the top manga violence and realism when it comes to delinquency but he never builds up any character backstory which is a shame but also one of the reasons why his stuff is nice to read.

Gokusen is high tier I'd say. Also, why would you consider Akatsuki!! Otokojuku below Sakigake!!? It improves on everything Sakigake!! did and is even more hype because it brings out past characters.

I was thinking of including BR in the GOAT category actually.
As for Akatsuki and Sakigake, I prefer the interactions between characters in Sakigake more, I like the main cast more and I liked the fights in Sakigake more.
Bringing back old characters is great but Akatsuki uses it a crutch to let Miyashita quickly inject hype rather than write something legit entertaining but he's been doing that forever. Maybe I'll change my mind when the whole thing is done, who knows.
