I think the GitS movie would have a chance if Luc Besson directed it like he did with Lucy. Not because Lucy was a good movie. It was absolute shit, and basically a live action Elfen Laid. It's definitely one of the better movies from Hollywood in the past 10 years. It's still far from the norm. We get many more shit films and pretentious art pieces like Revenant than we get good films every year.
That movie, Sicario, is particularly good because it's one of the few action films that actually has a decent plot aside from the action. The concept of the U.S. government backpedaling into bringing back big cartels because of the chaos caused by destabilizing the Colombian drug cartels was pretty unexpected from an American film. Also, Benicio was pretty good fit for the role and Josh Brolin is always great.
