A lot of people hate Shinji, but I think he's relateable in some way.

He's just some idiot kid who's thrust into a unwanted situation he has little to no control over and he gets no respect or recognition for risking his life on a daily basis. Despite the all the emotional suffering, he still somehow comes to accept himself in the end
