It certainly didn't just "give up" but died instead. the virus probably needs the host's vital functions to sustain itself. since it couldn't make it in time, it simply died off and became inactive. I presume the MC is going to bear a strong resistance against this virus after this incident, because the dead virus cells still remained in his body, so his immune system could have adapted in order to prevent a further infection at a later point; just the same way a vaccine does work
