The point I was making is that in current harems like Infinite Stratos, Asterick and Hundred, male characters usually just exist to stand around and make the main character look better by comparison, or are some sort of evil, obnoxious or terrible character for the main character to destroy. That, or any guy that shows up is clearly much older or disabled, and clearly "not in the running"

This isn't a thing that harem series want to even bother with anymore. Shows like Infinite Stratos have the entire backstory written so the male character is the most significant guy in the world and can be surrounded by women.
SAO's writer admits that he can't write female characters that don't love Kirito and doesn't bother to try. The only other relevent male main character that isn't a monster rapist or old guy is Klein, who is basically a cheerleader for Kirito.
Asterisk War has Lester, who exist to make what's his name look better by comparison.
My point is that current harems don't even bother trying to do anything with male characters, and treat them as obstacles or obstructions
